Default OBD plug, no power.

1998 dodge dakota, 2wd, 4 cylinder
OBD plug has no power and the check engine light is solid on. I tried the on off on off on off on and I get no code as well. Under the dash, it appears that the cables are intact. Any common reason why someone would disconnect the obd plug, or any common issues with the circuitry?

The fuse is good. Lighter is also working.

Didn't you have the dash wire mess with wires hanging down?

Yes. As far as the plug goes, and the wiring, they have not been tampered with, the wrapping is intact under the dash, then it merges a larger clyster that also appears to be untampered

OK but Im guessing wires are messed up my under dash wiring was trashed by a security system installed by an Idiot kid that just didn't care took me months to sort out everything. I had all kinds of weird wiring problems and actually a Dodge dealership fixed what I couldn't thats how bad it was.

So take a good long look under the dash take a few pic's if possible.

Also look into the OBD port it could be dirty or gunk in it you never know.

Good advice, thanks!
I am done with it until the weekend. I am proud of myself, never worked on electrical problems before. I sorted out most electrical problems (dash lights, tail lights, brake lights, high mount center brake light, dome light, brake light switch)
Still a lot of work to do but I'm 100% street legal.
OBD port and blower motor (or resistor) are #1 on my list
After I get these sorted out, I'll start with speedometer (not working) and reverse lights.
I will start a new thread for each issue as I tackle them.

are you sure there's no power to the DLC connector? Or is it just that the code scanners don't work? If you have a voltmeter, check pin 16 on the connector for 12 volts.
There is more than one reason to not be able to retrieve the codes.
Can you get the codes to show in the odometer? BTW, THAT'S ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON.
