Thanks for your help thus far... its hard not to think the whole engine has gone to pot when you read all the posts about rod knocks and spun bearings etc... If this were an 8v 1.8 litre or a horizontally opposed, I'd know what to do... but this is as heck of a lot bigger and more stuff to learn... which is always good.

Car isn't insured just yet so its mostly driveway idling... the noises are a bit unsettling so I am going to try and source a manual oil gauge to test when its running... I might snap a video in the morning... I'm sure you're all better at identifying foreign (to me sounds).

Behaviour of the gauge: So the oil gauge in the cluster rises to mid-range when starting and idling... and then, it slowly lowers to the 25% range... suddenly drops to 0... and then suddenly, like it has made an electrical contact, it jumps back to 25% and rises to mid range again... anyone have this? I don't notice the gauge rising when I push the rpms... having said that, its in the driveway so I am only hitting the pedal and going to 4k in a blip. Should it be articulating further? Or reacting to the short increase in revs?

cheers!

The lash adjusters/lifters on the 4.7 if dirty can become very noisy and cause potential serious problems the 4.7 demands quality clean oil.

The lash adjusters/lifters will take time to clean out or may never clean out and may need replacing.

Thanks for this!

I guess what confuses me... is the engine (before changing the oil) had no noises... it was very smooth... albeit it, with spent oil and a filter that looked like it hadn't been changed... but once I changed the oil and filter, the engine was much louder in all respects.

I will definitely give it time and start it up as soon as I source the oil gauge

Cheers!

My guess is he was using thicker oil to quiet it down and possibly an oil additive but thats all it will do a thinner quality oil is better but nosier.

But you could have a problem

I used Mobil 1 regular in my truck for years then I tried their gold Mobil 1 and it was like water very thin and I picked up a lifter tick and just sounded louder a year later I switched back things are quieter again.

You may need to try different oil but thicker oil will not protect your engine any better just quiet it down some unless your engine is very worn out then thicker oil helps. But use the proper oil viscosity required for your engine and the climate you drive in.

Default Oil pressure continued.... with movie

I appreciate Dakarizona and everyone else pitching in their two cents... It's nice to have sound advice from dodge enthusiasts.

I started up the truck this morning... It was loud as hell... No pressure... Turned it off... Tried again and the engine mellowed and quieted to a purr... With the oil gauge at middle.

I guess I am not used to all the valvetrain noise having little overhead cams all my life...anyways, I took a 6 minute video and the truck just idled and the gauge stayed around middle... Of course, the minute I Turned it off it started sweeping with no changes in sound of what not.
*** meant to say injectors are clicking

Im beginning to think your noise is not even related to the oil pressure.

Im thinking you have a dry belt tensioner one of the wheels are dry or the power steering pump or other part like alternator. Those wheels go dry and sequel like hell or your belt is slipping.

Try this pull the new oil pressure sending sensor out check it for muck dirt clean reinstall see what happens.

If still strange get the oil pressure tester

Your engine sounds fine to me

Thanks Dakarizona, I'm assuming you saw the movie I just posted?
Yeah, sounds strong and smooth to me... Injectors are clicking but I remember my jeep sounding like that. It was very loud this morning though so I don't know if starting it up will start to freshen everything up more often so it doesn't take so long for parts of the engine to receive oil.

I'll pull the oil sensor again, inspect and try again.

I merged the threads. It's easier than having to look at two different threads on the same topic.

Put the manual oil pressure gauge on the truck. Verify your oil pressure.

Thanks Dan, I figured if the thread started into multiple pages, people would get lost (i.e me lol)

Getting the manual gauge today.

Default Its alive...!

Hey guys,

so thanks for the help with regards to the problem with my sweeping oil pressure gauge... after the oil change and a few runs up and down the street, it hasn't been an issue ever since... knock on wood.

That being said, having not known what has been serviced I am going to be doing what I usually do when I pick up new vw's... replace all the basic stuff...

Ordered a set of spark plugs, air filter, belt tensioner (because you can hear it) fan clutch (because its loud at all temperatures) and the water pump/tstat (because of the former). I'm also waiting on an exhaust gasket and bolt set to replace the leaking drivers side.

Questions:
How much coolant will I be losing when I crack the water pump open and lower rad hose? Should I plan on having several buckets handy?
When I add the coolant (via the overflow tank as I am told) are there any burping or bleeding methods that will make the system run as it should?

Thanks everyone!
