Question Will NV3500 MT from 1999 work in 2003?

Hi all. I have a 2003 Dakota QC 4WD w/ 4.7 and the manual transmission. I found a 5 speed manual transmission with transfer case out of a 1999, will it work as a replacement? The 1999 had a 5.2 and mine is a 4.7, both are 4WD. I wasn't sure if they changed anything on those transmissions and transfer cases with the engine changes that took place going from that 5.2 to 4.7.

Going to part and rebuilder sites they show different tag numbers between those manual transmissions, but both show they are NV3500. Anybody here know for sure if it will or will not work and what the differences are if any? I really appreciate any assistance. Thanks!

I purchased a NV3500 out of a 04 dakota with a 4.7. I plan to use it behind a 5.9 that I will be putting in a 87 dakota.
I do know the output splines are 23, same as a 91 231 transfer case I plan to use. The input is 10 spline, and it is my understanding the 4.7 and 5.2-5.9 share the same bell housing layout. I sure hope so.
So, what im saying is, I believe it will fit. From what I read, there were some changes to the NV3500 after 2000 but it had to do with noise etc. Not fitment.
Oh, and the NV3500 in a dakota vs a ram is different. ie. shifter location.

Good info, thanks. I read up on those noise improvements and such but still can't figure out they why they aren't listed as interchangeable. Maybe those internal changes make it "different" but perhaps it would bolt right up.
