I just bought my first Dakota a 2002 sport 2WD 4 cylinder. The engine check light is on and giving me the code P1494..which is supposedly an Evap issue either the gas cap, the tubes going to the evap pump or the evap pump.

The gas cap looks good the o ring is not hard or cracked. I looked at the two rubber hoses connected to the gas fill tube they look good too..not hard, cracked or dry rotted..is there another spot where the line goes to rubber again and could be leaking??

Last; the Evap pump..where is it????

Anything else that can cause this error code???

I just replaced the hoses on mine. I couldn't ever find the leak either until i relocated my battery to the bed and removed the battery tray. Yea, then ALLLL the leaks were exposed!

 

so the hosees that lead to the evap pump are under the battery tray???

 

Yes they are. Depending on truck options, you might have an ABS controller under there too. I forget what dimension the hose is, but 5/8 rings a bell.

The charcoal can has 2 major hoses, one goes to the fuel tank, the other runs up to the Leak Detection Pump under/next to the battery tray. Then a hose runs from the LDP to the intake manifold, and another hose runs from LDP to an underhood vent canister.

 

Wow..if the gas cap isn't the problem looks like I'll be tracking hoses for a while..

 

I moved all mine into the fender. But this gives you an idea of what you're looking for. I don't have a picture with it all scattered.

To the left is the LDP, can see where i hole-saw'd the fender for it's electrical connector. On the right with the white electrical connector is the purge solenoid.

I went to look for mine and it's next to the battery on its' own rubber mount, I think no need to remove anything to get at it. Do I have the right thing? in the pic the top of it is just to the right on the battery strap. At least that's what I bought haven't installed it yet..$38.00. All the tubes going to it look good not dry rotten at all and still pliable.

second what I bought.

 

Crawl under the truck close to the gas cap location and check the evap lines into the charcoal canister.

It may be in a different location in a 2002 you cant miss it not hard to notice a big black box with a number of tubes going into it.

Also with the 2.5 the evap suction hose connects to the intake manifold under the throttle bodys MAP sensor with an rubber L but a 2002 may have a different fitting but the same location these rubber L connectors rot and leak air. To see it you may need to crawl under and look under the intake manifold.

I found a replacement for the L connector at Autozone in their odes and ends section with all kinds of small stuff.

 

OK new question same topic..I have replaced the evap leak pump. When I was reconnecting the tubes to it I noticed that the two tubes run down next to the wheel well and then "T" into each other is that how it's supposed to be.....T-ed together??? So the two tubes/lines are effectively one line, a few feet from the Evap leak pump!!!! From the "T" I am not sure where it goes hard to see it's route..
