Default 4wd problems

My 2002 Dakota v6 is having 4wd issues. When I first start it up it automatically kicks into 4hi and shifts back and forth a few times then stops and the service 4wd light comes on . It locks into 4hi and will not shift back to 2wd. The lights on the switch seem to be working fine but it stays locked in 4wd. Then I kill it and restart it and same thing all over again. Anybody have any idea on what could be going on. I don't know much about 4wd mechanics

Welcome to the forum Nate.

It's likely a TCCM problem - transfer case control module. You could get it scanned.

Mechanically, an actuator engages the mode you select.

Don't drive it on bare pavement in 4hi. You can damage the transfer case unless you have full time 4wd.

Thanks for the feed back. It ended up being the transfer case shift motor was shot and I found a new one for 90 bucks. I haven't fixed it yet but I will post again when I do

Default Engage 4wd manually

Does anybody know how I can engage my 4wd manually without the transfer case shift motor on it?
