Default 2003 pcm

I have an issue in my 03 Dakota where the voltage gauge will peg as an overcharge. I put in a new alternator which I later found out that it doesn't have a built in regulator. I was told this is controlled by the pcm. The voltage spikes are ramdom and only go on for a few minutes then go back to normal. Want to replace pcm but I am hearing stories that I have to find one from an 03 only with the same options. Are they all different or is there some interchanges possible. I found one from an 01 that have the same 3 connections. Would like for this problem to go away. Please help!!!

03 would be 3.7 OHV i think, not 3.9 pushrod motor. But i could be wrong.
