Default Converting a 2wd 47re to 4wd

Hello all, I'm a newbie here so please bare with me. Sorry if this is beating a dead horse, but exactly as the title states I have a 2wd 47re in a donor truck, 2500 full size. I'm planning a build of a solid axle swap dakota. The 5.9 engine and Dana 70 will come from the donor truck. I'll source the front Dana 60 elsewhere. I want to run radius arms and coil overs. Being since I have the 2wd 47re and matching engine already, and to make it physically work i just need the overdrive unit and t case as far as the transmission is concerned; can I use the stock pcm that is in the donor and have it flashed? Could I use the pcm from the 4x4 dakota I purchase (I don't have one yet)? Do I have to source a pcm from a full size 4x4 to control the transmission? An engine swap and solid axle conversion shouldn't be that complicated, but will be a great deal of work. I just want to know how to control the transmission. I really don't want to go the divorced t case route. Thank y'all for any info you can give!

47re is for the diesels you have a 46re. The overdrive housing is different for the 4wd so you need to change that and the output shaft. Use the pcm from the donor truck, You need to make sure it work with your year dakota. There where some changes from year to year. The main one being the speed sensor. There are different types and they where put in different places depending on year. You need this to work or you will have no overdrive.

Yup, I was aware of the output shaft but I didn't know about the 46 and 47 re difference. I also have a 2wd 2000 cummins, I guess that's where I got the 47re from. If I were to keep it the same year as the donor truck (2000), would it work?

Not sure yet, I haven't found one yet. I'm just in the planning stage.

Ah. Stick with 96 and up then, they are at least OBDII.

your best bet will be to find a cheap 3.9/5.2/5.9 4x4 dakota with a bad engine or trans, that way you can swap your engine and axle in and swap out the transmission tails. Then you'll have a PCM set up proerly ready to go.
