Default 98 Dakota transmission problems

I have a 98 Dakota 5.2l. a few months ago i was driving when the trans temp light came on and the overdrive light came on. Then half an hour later the transmission goes into 4th or 5th gear and will not downshift unless i manually do it. After trying to fix the problem there were no gauges that came on and it didn't start until I went and unplugged the wires on top of the transmission. Everything worked except it is still staying in high gear and when i plug the connector back in it shuts off and wont start until i unplug it. Does anyone know about this problem?

Any codes? Which connector are you unplugging? There is a bunch of them in that area.
