Hi new to this forum with an 04 RWD 4.7L, CC Dakota, just discovered this forum and figured to was the perfect place to see if anyone has ever had this same problem that has stumped me for the last two days.. I know this is a long post but thanks a million to anyone who reads and has a say!
Truck is parked on my driveway with a small incline, after starting the truck when i went to shift in reverse yesterday (took ebrake and regular brake off), the truck shifted into reverse no problem, but didnt start rolling like it usually would down a hill as if something was blocking it from behind, tried going into neutral and it didn't roll down the hill which is weird, but would roll forward like ususal after giving gas (it doesnt doesn't roll forward on its own on this incline).
So again i switch into reverse and no prob switching but no movement from truck (touching pedal and no rpms going up, but as if there was a car parked directly behind me).. end up pushing the pedal down and quickly hear an unfriendly clunk and i was off, no prob switching into reverse all day driving, no foul sounds from the tranny.
today i go to back out of my driveway again, and its the same damn thing expect this time if i press the pedal i hear a spinning tire sound and then a burning smell (brakes maybe?, all were disengaged) but the truck wouldn't go, the rpms werent reving at all.
*last part* i end up driving roughly 2ft into my garage in forward, switch into reverse and can roll the 2ft i went forward no prob, than get caught again in the same spot, THERE IS NOTHING IS THE WAY LOL, I end up going forward again, turning the steering wheel a different way and going in reverse again, and it rolls out no problem...
Agree with HY, you have a brake shoe hanging up and/or possibly delaminating. If you have drums, the E brake is activated with the regular brake shoes. If you have discs, the parking brake drums are on the inside of the disc brake rotor. I'm not sure if you can service them without removing the primary brake caliper and the disc.
Okay thanks for the replies guys, *Sign of relief its probably not the tranny lol* was guessing it was the back brakes (as mentioned it OP), but havnt done much work on this truck myself since i got it 6months ago, dont even know if they are drum or disc brakes...
Guess ill have to pull the tires off tmrw and see if i can figure out whats going on, i adjusted the back drum brakes on a chevy not too long ago so they wouldnt catcg/be hung up, guessing it would be similar on a dodge?
Also anyone know why id only have this problem when the truck is sitting for over ~12h?

This is why I am thinking the shoes might be trying to delaminate. They're trying to bond to the drum, so either the release is pulling away from the shoes, or the shoes are coming apart. Don't know till you look inside.
Okay from what i can see through the rim it is pretty rusty and worn in the there, id guess its bonding when it sits and then ok when the friction heats it up but again im not expert haha.
thanks again for the help, i'm gonna take the tires off sometime this weekend to take a look, ill let you know what i find!
The 03-04 have rear disc brakes, but the parking brake portion is actually a drum setup. A common problem with the OEM parking brake shoes, is the brake lining falling off. Ask me how I know? That's probably what's catching and releasing back there. Changing the brake shoes is not that hard. You do NOT have to pull the axle, even though that's what the manual will tell you.
