Default Crankshaft angle sensor

Help! I have an 03 Dak with a 4.7. I have generally been unhappy with this truck, which I got to replace an 02 Durango with a 5.9 liter that I loved. Despite the Durango having twice the miles and the body being beat up, the engine was trouble-free.
In the latest of a series of irritating issues, I got in my truck one morning and it was skipping and popping and giving off a misfire code. So the mechanic said it was probably the crankshaft sensor. I watched videos and read up on sensor replacement and found nothing that mentioned that the sensor can get seriously stuck in the engine. I set out to remove mine, the bolt came out easily but the sensor stayed in. I followed all the directions I found - and I have worked on cars for 20+ years. No luck. So my mechanic told me to drill holes til it would come out in pieces.
The end of the story is that I can see it, but it is completely in the hole, next to what looks like it may be the end of the crankshaft. Does this mean I have to drop the oil pan and get to it? If so, what to do about the suspension running under the pan?
What should I expect to pay to get this done, if I can get truck pulled to garage?
I would love it if someone could honestly tell me this part is easy and inexpensive, but I don't imagine I will hear that!!

Default P.S.

I kinda expect to read something that rhymes with "four bucked."
😞

Can you run a small screw into what's left of the sensor, and then use that to pull it out?
