I'm a grandma trying to replace the map lights in the overhead console in my 01 Dakota SLT 4x4. I've dropped the entire console, no easy access there. That leaves popping the lenses but I've seen two completely different methods, neither of which was performed on exactly the same lens configuration. Here's mine...
Thanks and Merry Christmas!
I tried that but there's a plate to remove and that's covered with wires that would have to be removed first. I'm thinking these bulbs need to be accessed from the lenses.
You are correct it seems. This is from the 01 Ram service manual, but, I suspect they are the same. Go gently please.
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable.
(2) Insert a long, narrow, flat-bladed tool between
the curved (outboard) edge of the reading and courtesy
lamp lens and the overhead console housing
(Fig. 5).
(3) Gently pry inward and downward against the
lens until the latch tab in the center of the outboard
edge of the reading and courtesy lamp lens is disengaged
from the overhead console housing.
(4) Pull firmly on the lens toward the outboard
side of the vehicle to disengage the two pivot tabs on
the inboard edge of the reading and courtesy lamp
lens are disengaged from the overhead console housing.
(5) Remove the reading and courtesy lamp lens
from the overhead console housing.
It's been six months since the map light burned out on one side and I decided to just go for it. I used a thin, flat blade screwdriver and gently pried at the rear inside edge of each lense, correctly thinking there would be pins there. The plastic is surprisingly sturdy and flexible so no damage done. The first one came off with a loud pop but my prayer was answered with success. I changed out both OE map lights as well as the rear dome light with Sylvania 6411 LED bulbs. Those original lights were hot! The new ones give off a cool light rather than warm, but I'm not picky. I just don't want to have to change them again! Getting the lenses back on right took some time and I had to put some muscle into it.
