iight guys so iv'e got everything to remove this little pony 3.9 magnum and put in a monster 5.9.
the engine is commnig in 2 weeks , come complete with flex plate , pcm , and harness. already paid and everything.
my truck is : 99 dakota sport v6 3.9L magnum auto 2wd.
engine from : 01 dakota r/t v8 5.9L magnum auto 2wd.
i'm using my 42RE... for now.............
what am i better with ? my v6 ecu or the v8 one ? ( 1999 v6 and 2001 v8 PCM )
also will my cluster work or i'm better buy a 01 one ?
for sure i'm not gonna play with wires under the dash... it's pita in case i have electrical problem and i fixed it for good because of that ( removed connector and soldered wire by wire ). so ill do it next to the pcm with loom and heatshrink.
i did read the amazing red9535 thread for the swap but i'm not sure... the seller said i'm way better with the pcm that come with , but some other says keep v6 ecu...
TIME is not a factor. i can take a month or two to wire it.
You'll need a new PCM, for a 1999 5.9l or you could try the 3.9.
The '01 PCM won't work. Dodge changed from the CCD bus (2 wire) to a PCI bus (1 wire) in '01. It's not just the cluster but EVERY module, ABS, airbags, PCM, CTM, and cluster won't work.
alright thanks. ill wire my v6 pcm for now and later get a 99 v8 pcm.
can you tell me why they say i NEED a pcm the same year as my truck even on a newer v8 engine ?
i guess its for the ccd - pci bus thing but maybe there another reason... like maybe just way faster and easier..
when the engine arrive ill remove snow and ice to get the truck out ( stored for winter , the good old way )

Dodge made subtle changes thru the years, and even sometimes, mid-year........ so the interchangeability is rather limited. You will need to have the 6 PCM flashed for the 5.9.... otherwise, it won't be aware of the other two cylinders.

thats not what everyone else say. not saying you are wrong.
even a friend with a swapped 318 told me all he did was add 4 wires for 2 injectors and extend a sensor wire.

No, you'll have to have it reflashed. Even at that, not all V6 PCM's came with the pins for injector 7 & 8 populated/connected internally.
ok. because FSM have injector driver pins and wiring pinout for all engine , for 98 durango and 2000 dak and ive read another thread somewhere the dude says it can be done it just dont run perfect ( without reflash ) as a temp solution waiting to find a PCM.
if i can find the thread ill post it
NEWS !
i got the engine yesterday. very clean.
it came with the 01 ram ecu but i knew this wouldnt work so i told him to keep it and saved 50$.
i tried my v6 pcm , nothing
i looked everywhere for a 99 5.9 pcm with no luck. i found one at "car-part" but the seller wont ship.
all i can get is 98 and 2000 5.9 pcm or 99 5.2 pcm.
i know 5.2 will work " fine " but not at 100% of its power. but how much ? wount it run WAY too lean ?
i know a lean condition of say 15.7:1 isnt that bad unless you are forced induction but stock is ok. not the best but still fine.
in just 3 calls i could buy about 20 used 99 5.2 PCM. they are everywhere. and near me.
those options are out of questions because canada = scammer. even shipping outside canada is a scam. ( quoted 940$ CAD at 4 dealers for a reflash and take a month + 200$ for shipping both way )
- reflash.
- buy used online.
- shipping outside canada.
so why a 98 PCM wouldnt work if the FSM are the same 100% ? i had a 98 durango cluster in my dak so this isnt the problem as it was working.
Get a 99 5.2 PCM. The O2 sensors will even out the fuel trims into decent approximation. Or you can get with somebody [Cough]Flyin Ryan Tuning[/cough] for a 5.9 reflash tune.
like i said , reflash , tune, or whatever related to programming or two-way shipping is a NO GO here.
so if the 5.2 PCM will work fine for the 5.9 , i'm in business. i can get alot of them for 99.
