Band adjustments
I've read in many places online that the band's are to be loosened[after the recommended tightening] 2 turns, some 3 an 1/2,an one up to 5.
For a 42RE automatic 6 cyl 2wd,01,
What is the manufacturers specs or recommendation on tightening /loosening front an rear bands ?
Also is there any way to tell if they are bad ?
Generally when overdrive clutch ring/clip breaks an reverse is gone will it bust these bands too?
Thanks

As per the Chilton's manual, and the FSM. Both state for the 42re, front band tighten to 72 inch pounds, back off 3 5/8 turns. Rear band tighten to 72 inch pounds, back off 4 turns.
Keep in mind, the rear band takes a square drive.
They should not break each other, one or the other break. If your front band is broken, you should have found a piece in the pan.

EDIT: Here's a picture from my Chilton's book, which covers Dakota 97-00. I would lean towards 3 turns from the FSM personally. However, the rear band, that you're concerned about is still 4 turns in any source material.

Thats interesting Chiltons says 3 7/8. An the one shown before that by magnethead showed, 3 turns for my 42re .
Should I go with the 3 turns since its more model# specific 42re?
And it being from FSM.
It is a 01 model
what all does this help with on front band?
