I finally got the overdrive pulled .
is this bent up band the snap ring?
It does have those ridge ends.

I may get it rebuilt or buy another thats rebuilt.




Should my main transmission be ok though band broke?
An should I look at anything in valve body like spring to accumulater,Sensors ,solonoid,etc?

update:see last pic..accumulator spring busted into 3 pieces too.

 

It's gonna be a crap shoot. That snap ring got mangled, and a band broke. You *might* be ok, then again, you might not. Are you a gambling man? You could have the O/D unit rebuilt, replace the band, and see what happens, but, if it fails again, you will have to have the O/D unit torn down again, to clean it out....... as well as have the trans rebuilt.

Think I would just go directly to the rebuild...... or replacement trans.

 

I did look at rear band an it looks intact..I will adjust it though.

I drove 2 miles after loosing reverse an never went over 30 mph.
did hear whine noise though.

What was happening, as driving with that ring like that, in main transmission?

 

Possible grindage from things breaking, getting wrapped up in other things, and then circulated thru the trans...... Might last 5 year, might last 5 minutes...... As I said, it's a gamble.

 

I'm gonna say the whine was likely that snap ring being eaten by the OD unit with how mangled it is. I will say, your OD unit looks a lot better than mine did last year. Don't have to worry about that giant 800lb spring when you simply friction weld it down with the planetary gears.

If your rear band looks good and there's no other obvious damage in the front-side of the transmission. Adjust both bands and I would suggest grabbing an OD unit from a junkyard. You don't know the wear and tear on it, but as long as it's complete, it should get you through and answer if that was the solution. If so, begin a fund for a full rebuild in the nearish future. Make sure to clean a junkyard unit good. You SHOULD be able to use the OD from any RWD Ram/Dakota/Durango of similar year models. As I recall, the OD unit is exactly the same between the 42/44/46RE. The 42 is behind the 3.9, 44 behind the 5.2 (Dakota), and 46 behind 5.9 (Dakota, Ram, Durango), and a 46 behind the 5.2 in the Ram as well.

What else can bust when this happens that I should look at replacing?

 

I've read that the 3-4 accumulator spring breaking can cause the OD snap ring to shatter. Grab an HD .126" Sonnax spring. They can be found in various places for around 5-10 dollars. No sense in not replacing it anytime you take the pan off, especially since it's a common fail point. I have one laying around for when I do a fluid change.

 

Want my opinion?

Get a 42RE from the junkyard. Steal it's OD unit, stab it on your trans.

Take junkyard trans and your old OD unit to be rebuilt

Poof, you're up and running and have a spare trans to keep for when (not if) you need it.

 

Or go on some massive mod adventure and put a 2 speed powerglide in it....
