I think we can rule out converter unlocking because at that low TPS% unlocked should only be at 10% or less, so it's definitely in the gearbox.

Is it dropping out of O/D? Maybe a bad connection at the PCM, or failing solenoid?

No, it’s just never engaging the gear. It strikes me as odd that I have it one day and then lose the gear the next morning. I even added a jug of stop slip and leak with no changes. I can take it by a shop but I feel they’ll just give me a run around and go straight for a rebuild price.

Quite likely.

Wonder if you could just have the O/D unit rebuilt, and if that would solve it..... I suppose, tearing it down would tell the tale. But yeah, most trans shops will go straight for the complete rebuild. I understand their position though, hard to warranty your work if you only do a third of the job.

This is the 545 slushbox, it's all one unit unlike the 4*RE/RH.

There was a whine coming from the transmission while in park that went away after it was put in reverse and then didn’t come back. I checked fluids and a small amount of smoke was coming from the dipstick.

I found a used 45rfe at a local junkyard for $250. Does this seem like a good price and what should I check out if possible?

No warranty unfortunately. I also found a rebuild kit online for about the same price. But I can’t seem to find a video or write up on the subject.

Now there’s a whine in park and neutral only. What could this be?
