Default 98 ram 1500 5.9L Crank, No Start

1998 Ram 1500 5.9L: Crank – No Start. It has Fuel, good Fuel Pressure, Spark, the Static Timing is correct, and the injectors are working. Have replaced the Idle Air Control valve, Cam Position sensor and the Crank Position Sensor.

This problem developed over about 20 driving cycles. Initially the engine started to “stumble” when left at an idle for very long and would die unless the RPM was increased. At anything above an idle the motor performed normally – smooth and powerful. Then it got to dying immediately at an idle and was difficult to restart (turned over great but just misfired occasionally and only seemed catch as the starter was released (not during the cranking cycle). Now it just cranks with the occasional “misfire” and may stumble for a moment at the end of the cranking cycle.

Will it start if you step on the gas a bit while cranking?

No, I've held it at open throttle while cranking and thought it stumbled/misfired a bit more but it did not catch

See what's missing. Spark, or fuel. Fuel pressure is going to be important here......

Well, you have addressed the exact point to my dilemma. Since it has spark (and correct static timing) fuel, good fuel pressure, and the injectors are working - why isn't it running? It seems as if perhaps either the ignition timing or the fuel injection timing is off. Maybe the PCM but the few checks that I have done on the PCM are positive.

LOST!

Either a bad voltage reading from a sensor or bad gas??? Distributor sensor (camshaft position sensor)?? MAP , TP , IAC?

Are you getting injector pulse? Does it stink like fuel while cranking? I would be tempted to plug in with a good scanner, and see what the various sensors think is going on, key on, engine off.

I would say no to bad gas because it runs great when it decides to run. The cam position sensor and IAC are new - but can they have intermittent problems? I guess I will double check the connections.

Yes the injectors are working, one can smell the gas and see little puffs of blueish gray smoke if you crank it long enough. In fact, now that I think about it that way: it acts much like it is flooded but it does not clear out when cranking with wide open throttle. Meanwhile, back to the sensors. Your suggestion is probably right - I'll need someone with more sophisticated tools than my PocketScan Plus to get some readings. Thanks for replying.

"Intermittent" that definitely makes my mind focus on the wire harness. What was once a intermittent issue may have become a static issue.
it's also possible for corrosion inside of a wire to cause a gradual increase in resistance while the insulation on the outside of the wire may appear fine.
