Default Engine rev's on start up

2001 Dodge Dakota Sport 4.7
Every time I start the motor it revs up to about 2000 RPM's and then slowly drops down to normal idle speed.
It just started this about a month ago.
Everything else works just fine now that I (with your help) fixed the overheating problem. Again, thanks for your help.

I have no idea what those abbreviations mean. Could you explain please?
Thank you, Tom/Idaho

CEL: Check Engine Light.
IAC: Idle air control (motor)
TPS: throttle position sensor.

If the cel is on, you can get codes read, (any major auto parts store) and that will give you a clue as to where to start looking.

IAC is in the throttle body. The passages like to accumulate gook, and the motor 'sticks', or can't close off properly, and you get odd idle issues.

TPS may be giving a false reading.... but, I would expect if that were the problem, the idle would never go back to where it is supposed to be.

A bit of an RPM flare at startup is normal.

Okay, I looked up the meanings for the abbreviations.
TPS.....Throttle position senser
CEL.....Check engine light
IAC.....Idle air control

No engine check lights is the only one I can answer. I should have mentioned that earlier.
The other two I have no idea.
That's why I came here.

Do you have an actual throttle cable? Or is your throttle-by-wire?

2001 4.7 is going to have a cable. My 03 has a cable.

OP, search youtube on how to clean the IAC. TPS, I'd probably go ahead and replace. Also pull off the air intake hose and clean the throttle body with a rag, carb cleaner and a soft toothbrush. Also spray all the linkages that move when you press the gas.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions. Mine has the cable. I will pick up a can of the indicated spray and do my best to clean the indicated parts. My big problem is my mobility is somewhat regulated to a wheel chair due to my last Dodge diesel running over me. It may take a few days, but I will follow up with results of your suggestions.
Thank you all, Tom/Idaho
