Is the C8.25 rear axle more common than the C9.25 rear axle?

yes and no.

The 9.25 is in almost all durangos to my knowledge. Some got the 8.25 but i don't know what the criteria were.

The 9.25 is under almost all Quad Cab dakotas and all Dakota RT's. It's also under the Ram 1500's.

The 8.25 is under all non-RT regular and extended cab Dakotas, as well as some Jeep XJ Cherokee's (some got a Dana 35 instead).

The main difference is if they are spring-over or -under axle, and how far apart the spring perches are. Durango IIRC are ~2" wider than Dakota, ~1" per side? But same flange width.

I don't know if the Cherokee is closer to the Dakota or Durango on perch width. I think Flanges are pretty similar, but they are also 5-lug. Ram is obviously wider in both perch and flange.

Also note that regarding 8.25; 00 and older are 27 spline axles, 01 and newer are 29 spline axles. Same diameter, just different spline count.

Might be because yours is a 5-speed. I'm thinking all 5-spd got the 8.25?

Is yours 2wd or 4wd?

96 was the transition year from the 27 spline to 29 spline Chrysler 8.25 axles. 95 and earlier are 27 spline, 97 and later are 29 spline, a 96 could have either.
