Default Transfer case

1999 Dodge Dakota Sport 5.2L 4x4
Help me out here, I’ve done a good amount of research regarding transfer cases as I am trying to figure out what specific one I need for my truck as the 5.2L has two different transfer cases (small chain or big chain). I have the tag off of it. I know there is NP and NV, does it matter which one it is? As New Process was basically replaced with New Venture, essentially the transfer cases are the same even with this name change correct?

231 D HD (I know it’s Dodge Heavy Duty which I’m guessing is the bigger chain)
52105674A (Part Number not sure if there is two A or just one, almost looks like it got double stamped)
3 15 99M1 (March 15, 1999)
272 or 273 (Gear Ratio, not sure if it is a 2 or 3 due to it be partially scratched out)

Basically what I’m needing to know is;
Is it NP231 or NV231 that I need to look for?
Is there any other specifics I need to look for when I am looking?

Either, the only thing that changed was who owned the company. The t-cases are exactly the same. There ARE differences over the years though, I suspect you will want one from a 98 and up, as the shift pattern changed for 98.

52105674AA is the mopar part number. the last digit increments with revisions (AA, AB, AC, AD, ect). The NP/NP231d are basically the same, yes. 23 spine in, 32 spline slip yoke out. The d on the end is what matters, jeeps are a 231J. The difference is input/output shaft length.
