Question 98 2WD V6 auto: How many VSS are there??

My ABS light has been on for years but the other day I lost the speedometer and my red BRAKE light came on at the same time along with a P0500 code.

So, I head to Rockauto for a VSS... but there seems to be three different styles listed for the 2wd 42re trucks?

Attached pics of what I found on Rockauto. What exactly do I need?

Only the bottom, threaded one is for the 97-99 case. The other 2 that are non-threaded round are for the rear axle.

The NSS for 00-04 is square and unthreaded.

Doesn't the speedo on those get its cue from the rear wheel speed sensor? (one of the top two, though I think the difference between them is one comes with a harness, and the other does not.)

Yeah that's where I'm confused. It says there's one on the trans and then one (or two??) on the rear axle. Just not sure what to order.

The one on the trans is the output speed sensor. I don't think that is used for the speedo, or anything beyond shift points..... Should only be one rear wheel speed sensor. Right on top of the pig on the rear diff.

ABS and speedo use the one on the rear diff. Pop it out and clean the metal off it first.

Transmission output signal is only used on the early trucks to set transmission disagree codes.

Awesome, thanks guys. I'll remove the one in the rear diff and check it out. Looks pretty crusty.

So the sensor I see on the driver's side rear of my trans... is that just for neutral/reverse lights or something?

The park/neutral switch is up by the shift linkage. OSS is about halfway back.

And the OSS is just for shifting, right?
