Default 99 Dakota won’t start

Fuel pump just changed out due to sending unit not working, the battery is dead like bad can’t keep it charged the lights work when it’s charged but it kills it when I try to start it up. When I turn the key It cranks and tries to start but can’t start and sometimes it tries hard like it almost started fully for my mother in law like glub glub glubbed and then nothing died and so did my battery. Also when my mechanic friend listened to the pump he didn’t hear the fuel pump kicking on when I turned the key on, but the fuel pump has to be working right because the sending unit is reading my gas right now at a quarter tank and that’s right. The battery is ten years old and I need to switch it could that be what’s causing this entire issue like the fuel pump not making the sound it’s supposed to and not starting or what else could be wrong what else should I do? Oh and the relays and fuses look good none look shot. I’m so lost. I don’t know much about trucks a little but really not a lot at all & I can’t afford a shop so please if anyone can help me out here I’d appreciate it a lot.

Pump, and fuel gauge are two separate circuits, even though they are in the same unit. One can fail, and the other still work just fine. Also, just because its 'new' doesn't necessarily imply that it works. If you bought the cheapest pump you could, I hope you enjoyed changing it, as you will get to do it again, and probably soon.

You can 'rent' a fuel pressure gauge from your local auto parts store.... they charge you for it, but, you get your money back when you return it. Verify fuel pressure... go from there.

If the battery is known bad then get that fixed first. You can't reliably test anything unless the power is good. You can get an everstart gold for ~180$ at wallyworld and will be one of the better cheap options.

For a battery that will last more than a year or two yes. I've never had one last more than a year when I buy the 100$ ones. I haven't had one of the 200$ ones die yet. The oldest is going on 12 years.

The battery in my 98 was purchased in 2017, for about 80 bucks. Still there, still works perfect.
