Oil pan gasket

Sounds like at some point, someone put two gaskets on. There should be only one.
And I know I told u to use RTV if you are trying to overcome a broken gasket without pan drop, but normally it goes on dry, I believe. Now if you do go that route, can skim a bit on the gasket. The mistake that some make is they put too much of the stuff on and go to tightening right away while still wet. That's how u get the squishing. You should finger assemble and wait at least half hour before tightening incrementally in a cross-cross pattern. Another mistake is not letting it sit and dry before driving. Now if the you don't use RTV, there is no waiting.

Just now got a GOOD LOOK.An entire blue gasket is intack front an back ! That darn front thicker part of older gasket --o e before this blue one, still intack i--must have lodged up in front an i thought it was out.... ithe entire corners are still good an sealed to block w rtv too on the 5 mo old good gasket..
Can i get away with just a good torque-at 17 ftlbs .. That is after i feel in pan for any loose rubber?

I found out what it is..Its that gasket from the front timing chain cover job[3000 miles ago] ..somehow it slid out ..is that a seperate piece ? As in is there now a gap there where it was....or is that in pic a part of old oil pan gasket .. .. new blue gasket there now. ..I did that timing chain cover job 1st,, -then put new oil pan gasket in. im gonna look at the old pics an diagrams ....
Any info is appreciated

Judging from this, yes. Looks like the black part is separate. Should be losing oil like crazy if it fell out though. I wonder if thats part of the old one and the new one is still in.

From old pics yep..I see the oil pan hole there inside where chain cover was..
Im thinking i sealed up the old on that cover as if it was a seperate seal maybe than put new in..
...
But i want to be sure theres only 1 seal there ..an its the oil pan gasket..
If my memory serves me i had a tear in both sides of it ..like it was a part of other one
The kit to my exact engine i bought did not have that in it

I always thought the oil pan gasket was one piece? Including the part that goes under the timing cover. When I did the timing sit on my 5.9, I just left that part in place, and was careful with the cover, not to rip it out when I pulled it, and make sure it was in the right place when I reinstalled.

I watched a utube of the 3.9 2wd dakota timing chain cover an there is only that oil pan gasket part..on mine anyway.., not a 2nd piece..So i guess some of those kits ,with a rubber replacement in them, is in case you rip the oil pan gasket..Not a 2nd..
Heres what service manual said
7) Loosen oil pan bolts and remove the front bolt
at each side.
(8) Remove the cover bolts.
(9) Remove chain case cover and gasket using
extreme caution to avoid damaging oil pan gasket.
(10) From the inside of the cover tap the front
crankshaft oil seal outward. Be careful not to damage
the timing cover ..
.i guess that 1st gasket is the Big Flat one ..
