Default Factory tach wiring

Anyone know how to wire up the factory tach on a 2001 dakota, swapped in a 5.9, carbureted and the tach is the only gauge that doesn’t work but I would like to use the stock one instead of aftermarket

PCM should send that data to the cluster...... It *should* just work.... Though it's possible the PCM needs to be programmed for that???? I don't think that's the case though. Does the tach pass the cluster test? (hold down the trip reset button, turn the ignition on, test should start, let go the button when it does.)

The cluster test hasn’t worked since i manual swapped the truck, just threw a code 960 and 999 but all the gauges still worked. I assume it threw the codes because of a lack of automatic transmission feedback. But after the motor swap i went with an older style ignition system and got rid of the cam sensor in the distributor, I assumed this sensor is why the tach doesn’t work now

The tach should run off the crank sensor on the back of the engine. But yes if you've converted to carburetor and MSD ignition, the factory tach will likely not work.

You can't. There is no 'tach signal' per se feeding the cluster. It gets ALL of its info on what to do with the gauges from the PCM...... via the trucks communication network.... I am curious how the other gauges are working....

Did you leave the pcm intact? If the sensors are hooked up to it that may be why the other gauges are working.

If that's the case, then theoretically, hooking up the crank sensor should make the tach work.

Does the flywheel/flexplate have the windows in it for the crank sensor to read??
