I changed the differential fluid after hearing a tad of a whine..Is this a sign of contamination or water or what?

Usually, there is a vent tube that holds the junction block for the rear brake lines to the axle. Should have a hose going to it, that just goes up and ends somewhere near the frame, with a plastic cap on it. (that is supposed to keep it from sucking in water.... doesn't always work. )

What he said ^^^. If you didn't run it through deep water, that shouldn't be a factor though.
