Default No shift from 3-4

Hello all I just recently finished swapping my transmission, it’s a 42re on a 2000 3.9 v6, the transmission I put in I pulled from a truck at pick n pull, everything runs and shifts smoothly EXCEPT for when I am in 3rd the rpm’s will just rise and do not shift into 4th, it did shift into 4 once or twice on the freeway after cruising at 3500 for a couple minutes but it hasn’t done it again and otherwise the rpm’s just continually rise and that was after it not shifting to 4 for the whole initial test drive after the swap. I do have an extremely bad exhaust leak right after my downstream 02 sensor just after the first cat, sounds like someone cut my cat off completely, I’m not sure if it’s possible for this to cause an intermittent issue of this nature? Any other suggestions or advice on what this could be will be greatly appreciated, also it is worth noting that online I would see “initial fill” 4 qts and “total fill” 10 qts for the tranny fluid however I have put maybe 7-8 qts only so far as the stick reads at the top of ok mark while the truck is in neutral. If anyone has experience with this model trans and can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated

it was either a 98 or a 96 I cannot recall however all the connections/everything about the transmission appears to be exactly identical

I thought there was a valve body change for the 2000 model year, but maybe that was only in the 46RE?

Sensors changed, as did the way they mount. The external connector stayed the same. The newer PCM expects a different range from the pressure and temp sensors, than the older sensors provide, so, the PCM constantly thinks the trans is too hot, and disables O/D. Install the correct year sensors, (governor pressure sensor and solenoid) and you are all set. However, the mounting bracket changed as well... If you still have your old trans, you can get the bracket from it.

awesome I do still have the trans, thank you for such a well informed response, so if I’m not mistaken I should be able to swap all sensors over from the other tranny? And to clarify, the only sensors needing replaced is the Governor pressure sensor and solenoid?

Check that large common pressure spring that breaks on them often too(see pic of kit)..shift solenoids for sure too.Its good to update them all while you have access....hopefully the overdrive is engaging correctly .I had to replace mine years ago an replaced them all an it was not that difficult.I had lost 3rd to 4th also ..
Any codes?

no codes, I turn the key 3 times and no codes there either, what is the unit from the pic with the wire harness? Is all of this accessible from under the pan? I’m assuming this type of job should take no longer than an oil change?

Gotta drop the pan, so, might just as well do a fluid/filter change as well.
