Default Transmission Identification

Hello,

I have a manual transmission out of a 2000 Dakota 6cyl 2wd that I'm attempting to identify. Googlefu is telling me it's either a nv1500 or nv3500 and there seems to not be much other information. A few posts here and there stating if it has a red tag it's a nv3500 others are saying you the only way to tell is to inspect the internals. Build sheet turns up nothing. Only states:

ALL MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS
5-SPEED HD MANUAL TRANSMISSION

The only thing I can find on the actual tranny is the bellhousing is stamped with NG25593. Googling that doesn't turn up anything. Any help in identifying it would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I'm no help here, I'm just surprised there is a NV1500 .... shows you what I know.
I have a 1991 Chebby truck with the NV3500 .... great transmission. I know they have the NV4500 with the first gear granny for bigger trucks.
I just never heard of a NV1500.

Hard to say, the Dakota is a smaller truck but they also came out with V8's .... I would think a transmission capable of handling a V8 is in order ..... half the V6 out there produce as much HP as a V8 ..... I know nothing and just guessing ... I'm thinking you have a NV3500.

It does say "HD" in the description.... From another site:
  1. Integrated Bell Housing
    • Feature: The NV3500 has an integrated bell housing, which means the bell housing is part of the transmission case.
    • How to Identify: Check where the transmission connects to the engine. An integrated bell housing will appear as a single, unified piece with the transmission case.
  2. Identification Tag
    • Feature: Most transmissions have an identification tag or stamp that includes the model number and other relevant information.
    • How to Identify: Locate the identification tag on the side or top of the transmission case. It will typically include the model number “NV3500” or “HM290”.

I had some photos around but not finding them now .... may be on my other pc in the office ...... that integrated bell housing makes it look huge.
Looks like a big ol 727 automatic transmission coming out .... A typical manual transmission is separate from the bell housing.

I pulled mine last year to replace the clutch, pressure plate etc....
That thing looks huge, I had to make a cradle for my floor jack to safely lift it and remove it .... install it.

For what it is worth, I did a quick google check on the NV1500, it is a popular transmission for the chebby S10 with a 2.2 4cyl engine.
Kinda what I was thinking ..... behind a V6 I would hope it would be the NV3500 .... Just a opinion
