Default Need power

I have a 97 stan. cab and a little 4-cyl.with a 5-speed. I like the economy, but I would like more power
I don't have the resources for a new truck and I don't want to swap out my engine until I kill this one (I want to do a complete overhaul in a few years)
I don't need gobs of power but more than i have would be good.
does anybody have any ideas on low-cost, DIY installs. I plan on dropping my truck soon, and I start college this June so money will be severly limited until i graduate.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Cold Air Intake ... Could make it yourself for cheap. Under-pully kit; if you can find it for that motor, is a good bang for the buck. Running Synthetic oil will pick up a little performance and fuel-economy. Exhaust system might help. Throttle body upgrade? - I don't even know if you can get an aftermarket throttle body for that motor... Does anyone know if you could advance your timing on that motor - that could be benificial !! ?? !! . . . Other than that, you'd be looking at Intake Manifold, Head, Cam -- Relatively speaking could be 'affordable' if you can do the work yourself .... Or how about changing out your rear-gear? No more housepower, but you'd feel a difference. Keep us posted on what you do; Follow ups are great. Good luck

Have to agree with Muy_Pyro. Only other things I could think of is cheap turbonator. Might actually make a difference on a small motor. Cold air intake is one of the first I usually see anybody do and is relatively cheap no matter if you buy it or make it. K&N or Airaid air filter deffinetley a wise thing to get.

Thanks, I'm still not sure but The ideas will help, I have a friend who can twin-turbo it for cheap but that would be a last resort, I plan on Never Leaving this truck in the hands of a shop, she never liked the idea. The intake will be the first thing, then a Tornado, my first tasks will be the small stuff.

Twin-turbo it for cheap? How about Single-turbo it for cheaper, and not blow the Living-Bajesus out of your motor? ... If you can go turbo for cheap, that would most definately be the biggest gain ... even 6-8 psi, that should be safe on a stock engine and give you good power.

P.S. don't waste your money on the Tornado - you'll notice absolutely no difference at all. Turbonators, Tornados, TB Spacers are all gimicks - save your money

I'll use the tornado for the fuel efficiency, I know it works for that I have one on my sunfire it gained me 7-9 MPG
I still don't like turbos but you're right about the single, I checked up and the work I would have to do to keep the pressure under control wouldn't be worth the short-term power gains.
Hows the V6's efficiency run on average?
I know the V8 is killer
If anybody could hook up a supercharger...

There is a electric turbocharger that you can do for your 4 banger. Let me know if you're interested in knowing more about it. It can give up to a 2psi gain into the intake.

It does sound interesting, I've not heard of such a turbo at all, more info would be great.

I said it incorrectly in the previous post. It is a electric supercharger not a turbo. I put two links below. The first is a link to a patented one which is a bit more expensive. The second is one that you can build yourself.

eRam Supercharger
eSupercharger

If you are interested in the second one, don't pay for the instructions. I have them and can send you a copy.

I like the eRam, even the little bit o' power would greatly help.
Thanks, I'll post my mods as they meet my truck.
Thanks, for the help
