Default clogged cat?

I believe I have A clogged Cat and I'll be putting a new muffler on soon so i want to check while i'm down there but I wonder what the easiest way to check and clear any clog with out taking the whole pipe off, there's three feet of pipe behind the cat and if i take it off i'll have to replace it.

You can't unclog a cat, you replace it, like an air filter.

I'd get a high flow cat and a decent muffler and have an exhaust shop fab it up for you.

OK, I was afraid of that.
How would I check to see If it's clogged? I don't want to drop the money for a cat if I don't have to. but if I do, I do.
Thanks

Well, I'm not sure there is a good way. You could remove it and try blowing through it, but I dunno. Bang on it with a rubber mallet to see if it rattles, but still that'll only tell you if the honeycomb is breaking apart.

the cat on my 98 v6 went bad. the honeycomb was breaking appart and rattles like crazy. sounded like crap. talked to my dealer and he said he'd look into it. he gave me a call and told me to bring it in and he replaced it free of charge. i was supprised. i dunno if there was a recal or something but otherwise ur lookin at about $100 to $150 dollars.

I think cats are supposed to be covered under federal emissions requirements for 10 years or something. If you're not interested in getting a high flow aftermarket one, talk to the dealer about getting it replaced.

This truck hasn't seen a dealer since '98 in texas.
But I'll check into it. my uncle is a body man at the local dodge dealer so I'll ask.
but the exaust Is now a solid piece of rust. so any removals will require a sawzall, Thats why I want to do as little dismantling as possible
I'll get a high flow if i have to. where would I start looking for a good one?
theres no rattles but i'm puttin the new muffler on today so i'll see what I can pull off.

www.summitracing.com is almost exclusively where I buy stuff. I'm absolutely sold on their customer service. Even if an item is a couple of bucks more there, it's usually worth it. I'd just get a universal Catco 2.5" (you've got a 3.9L right?) and have it welded in.

no, I've got a 2.5
Got the new exaust in, sounds great,
cut the old one off, bolted up a cherry bomb turboII
clamped on a foot long downturn.
made four-something feet of bent rust tube obsolete.
no clogs. I used a pen light to look in and saw the upturn in front of the cat with no trouble
Truck is noticably livelier, I hope for much more after I eventually get a high flow cat.
(school comes first)

EDIT: what makes the 50$ cats different than the 100$ one?
They are basically the same

With a 2.5 I'd go with a 2.25" pipe.

I really couldn't tell you what the difference is, unless maybe some have O2 sensor bungs and air tubes welded in and others don't.
