My gas mileage sucks!
My 3.9L gets 14 mpg off the freeway but sometimes it will be 15 on the free way if im lucky, maybe it might go to 16 or 17 when God decides to give me a break.
How about all of you? Whats your gas mileage at?

I have the 3.9L with the club cab and I'll get 20 mpg if I do straight highway (21 mpg a handful of times). If I do split driving I'll get between 16 - 17mpg. My truck has 50k miles.
Is your truck tuned up? When was the last time you replaced your air filter, plugs, wires, etc? I just switched to synthetic oil so I hope that helps a smidge.

Actually now that I notice this... after that check I have been having worse mileage. Oh and did I mention I have 138k miles?
i get the same mileage but i have a 5.2 V8 if i were you i'd replace the sparkplugs and wires for starter and then replace the distributor cap also with that mileage your catalatic converter could be junk mine was at 65K miles and it killed my mileage it dropped to 9 so have it checked if your not a do it yourself guy go in for a tune up it should help a lot also your air filter could be clogged
I've got 96K on my '96 (old body style) 3.9L, 4x4 automatic.
Over the last 4500 miles I've tracked gas mileage, it has gotten a grand total average of 15.18MPG.
City, averages 12-13 (depending on if I baby it or not, all my city driving is usually trips of not more than 2 miles - its 1.5 miles to work for me.)
Highway:
65 - 18-19.3MPG with A/C
70 - 17-18.5MPG with A/C
75 - 16-18MPG with A/C
80 - 15.5-17MPG with A/C
Best: 19.3MPG (65MPH with A/C)
Worst: 11.9MPG (city)
Running the copper Champion plugs, NAPA premium wires, FRAM air filter, Mobil Clean 5000 10W-30 dyno oil, was using FRAM oil filters (but have switched to Purolator since the Sears store sells them down here). (Tune up was done about 200 miles after I started to keep track of mileage, everything looked ok when I did the tuneup. From what I remember about my before-tune-up mileage, city did not see an increase, but highway saw an increase of 1-2MPG)
Running boards, and that bug shield thing that goes on the hood (see my aviatar), other than that, totally stock.
The main thing is (of course) be carefull not to give it too much gas (ie dont accelerate like hell)

I believe my O/D kicks in somewheres around 55-60MPH (haven't been to that speed in a month, in my truck at least, lol).
Of course, no where I travel has a speed limit of 55. It's either 35 (city) or 70-75 (highway Missouri and Arkansas) or 65 (highway Illinois).

I had a 2003 SXT 3.6L Club Cab and it seemed becasue of the weight of the truck I would have the gas peddle pushed down most the way like going from light to light or getting on the freeway to get up to speed and passing other people.......now that I can compare it to the truck I have now a 2004 SLT 4.7L Quad Cab......the 03 I got city 14/15 hwy 15/16 with just a K&N Drop in and a Flowmaster 40, on the 04 I get city 15.5/17 and 19/20.8 hwy with just a Airair CAI and a Flowmaster 40.....I know there are so many factors in MPG but in this case you have the same person driving in two different trucks and so the factors that count are pretty much the same....end result the best way to get better MPG in a dakota is with a V8....there is one draw back that you can control......if I race my truck around I can drop the MPG to 8.1 hehe....and we all know the data for the MPG the Feds put on your window sticker is on a dyno at 55MPH without a load or drag so of course if you are screaming along at 70/75 MPH the MPG drops quickly.

Just as bad as the EPA doing gas mileage tests under extreme controlled conditions is the crash tests that are done at 45MPH so people think their car is safe. Truth is, they gotta do them at 45MPH because most vehicles won't survive at more real-world-like speeds of at least 55MPH.
Oh well, it'll be the day the government doesn't lie to the people.
in my 99 4x4 5 speed manual v6. i get around 17 combined city and highway. i dont have an airconditioner in it so i have to drive with the windows down a lot of the time which i can tell slows me down. i can feel the drag underneath the truck as well since i believe there is a lift kit on it, and since its riding level i am told i can assume the torsion bar has been cranked. if i drive the way i did when i first got the the truck my mpg can drop as far as about 12 or 13 like it did in Duluth during the end of the winter. im going monday to install a flowmaster 40 and and a new tip for 130 bucks out the door, and perhaps it will give me an extra half a mpg. im told with the 3.9 its not going to really do anything since its such a restrictive motor, but one can hope. wish me luck, i hope the stick shift doesnt make my new muffler sound bad....
