this is probably a newb question but, im a newb. anyway theres a ticking/clicking noise coming from each side of my engine that sounds more electrical than mechanical. can you hear spark plugs firing? or is it something else.

What kind of engine? Does it have factory exhaust manifold. If you can find a 2-3' piece of hose (garden hose will do) and hold one end to your ear maybe you can better locate the source with the other end. Be sure to watch out for fan, belt, and hot things. This works well for exhaust or vacuum leaks.

it might be your wires arcing. i doubt it, but i have heard of it being loud enough to hear distinctly. make sure all of your wires are properly sealed and covered. just a thought.

Could be arcing but that is generally accompanied by engine missing/poor idle. A good way to check is in a dark garage or after dusk and look for arcs from plug wires. Spraying a light mist of water from a spray bottle (like window cleaner bottle) over the plug wires will really tell if its the plug wires. You'll see arcing and/or notice idle problem if the wires are breaking down.
