Kurby - what model dak do you have club or ext cab? If club, where did you stuff two 10s? I have the club and figured I was kinda screwed for stereo upgrades from the limited space I have for amps and subs.

component tweeter installs take about 10 minutes. use a hole saw to cut the hole in your panel, the speakers have a flush mount setup. you just pop them in and secure them using the included hardware. the install should not be feared, and is a terrible reason not to use go component. if you have to do it in peices i would start with component front speakers ($100-$200). if you cant come up with $200 i would save up a while longer and get the good stuff instead of a $70 set of speakers. I was in college and i know what its like to be poor but come on, if you can come up with enough for cheap speakers then you should be able to save up for the good stuff too. the seperate tweeters add a whole nother level of sound and clarity that adds to any type of music
you can do coaxial mount which has a seperate physical tweater that is mounted coaxialy with the mid.... A quick google search found that some pro audio guys dont actually like some of the remote mounting locations in the dakota anyways. Keep in mind when you bring the tweeter up like that it brings the soundstage up but it can screw with the locality of the sound. Idealy you want to be as close to equidistant as possible to all speakers. Moving the speaker to say the mirror area actually makes the drivers side speaker significantly closer to your ear then the passenger side. That isn't very good for imaging...

while i do not doubt that there is debate among audiophiles about speaker location you have to think more practical about the situation. for one thing the fact that the drivers seat is on the right of the vehicle means that you will have a locality issue no matter where you place the speakers. adjusting the balance is usually enough to compensate for this. i think the most important point though is that the tweeter produces high frequency sound, and high frequency sound it easily reflected and blocked by obstructions. People and feet are very good at distorting sound coming from the lower passenger area. lower frequency sounds like bass and most mid range sound can still sound pretty good when there's a body partially obstructing it but highs get screwed up. by locating the tweeter high off the floor you place the speaker in a unobstructed area. i think most importantly you need to remember that we are dealing with stereo, not surround sound. we only need to balance left and right channels in a partially obstructed environment in a surround sound system i would agree 100% to place the tweeters as close as possible to the other speakers. if you look at the premium infinity sound system available OEM on the Dakota you will see the tweeters mounted high, probably for the reasons i just mentioned. seriously though if your reading this and don't know what to buy, it doesn't have to be this complicated if you don't want it to be. I'm sure that integrated tweeters will still sound much better then OEM speakers.

I agree 100%, my comment was actually in re: some comments I had heard about the OE tweeter placement for the Inifinity system, that it was less then ideal, that is all

I have been trying diferent speakers for the same reason. In short, your not going to find a 6.5" speaker that gives of decent bass. The only way to get even remotly decent bass is to go with a 4 or 5 way speaker on the door. I bought the sony 4 way speakers for my doors and behind the seats and the bass is still pretty much non exsistant. I even bought the 6.5" woofers from ebay. Garbage, didn't work great at all. The only thing the 4 or 5 way will do for bass is make it sound clearer with less distortion. It sounds pretty damn good. The only way to get a little bit of bass (I WAS TOLD, AND READ) is to have a sub and amp. since I own a regular cab I dont have the room to go that route so I'm stuck with mediocre (at best )bass and an awsome sounding system.

If you're not building a show truck go to Wal-Mart and buy a set of Sonys or Pioneers in the stock replacement size. They'll fit behind your factory grills, be easy(sort of) to install, and the difference will be huge for only $100 to $125 depending on size.
