I'll be following this thread as well. OEM stereo is pretty dreadful, need to see what I can do to it without spending a metric buttload of money. I had boston acoustics coaxial stuff in my Jeep Wrangler back a few years ago, was considering going the same route here. Boston stuff necessitates an amplifier for best response tho.

sony's xplod line is a good way to go for quality sound with zero or minimal modification.

component is the way to go, and buy them at crutchfield. you can get a decent set of kenwood components for $160. or you can get a open box or somehting at ebay for half that

he'd have to have the skills to fabricate some sort of place to PUT the tweeter tho.... While the sound isn't as good, I think a GOOD set of coaxial mounts (basicaly a component set but the tweeter mounts in with the woofer) might be a better way to go. That is unless someone has handy a good way to mount them.....

yeah i agree, componets just mean a seperate woofer and tweeter, this usually adds the benifit of a higher quality crossover, and allows for the tweeter to be placed closer to your ears. The tweeter can be surface or recessed mounted. If moneys not a factor then id go componet, but 3 or 4 ways would sound great

I'm looking at this too.

I recently picked up a 2003 QC Dakota 4.7, and the stereo does seem a bit, for lack of a better word, distant. Christmas is coming, and I can't afford all those parts at once.

What do you think the cost is on an upgrade setup; I don't know what kind of system I would need at all. I mostly listen to rock and metal, like Guns N Roses and Van Halen, so outrageous bass and SPLs are not probably necessary.

component tweeter installs take about 10 minutes. use a hole saw to cut the hole in your panel, the speakers have a flush mount setup. you just pop them in and secure them using the included hardware. the install should not be feared, and is a terrible reason not to use go component. if you have to do it in peices i would start with component front speakers ($100-$200). if you cant come up with $200 i would save up a while longer and get the good stuff instead of a $70 set of speakers. I was in college and i know what its like to be poor but come on, if you can come up with enough for cheap speakers then you should be able to save up for the good stuff too. the seperate tweeters add a whole nother level of sound and clarity that adds to any type of music
