Now it seems my truck is doing it all the time. Its not a loud knock like a tap more. I put a screwdriver to my ear and to the oil pan and i could hear it coming from there. I just did the timing chain so it cant be that. Its bother me what the heck could it be? if i dont fix it will it hurt the truck?

I just stated my 99 up this weekend and there was a ratteling nose. it was really loud. so I checked everything out and it was an idler pully. I could move it back and forth quite abit. so now I'm gonna order one of them when I fix my a/c pump.

I know when GM had piston-slap problems on their Vortec motors (late 90's to early 00's), the affected engines would make noises at start-up, but they would go away when the engine started warming up.

As far as the knock you could also try out a preluber. Do a search in the 1st gen Durango section and you can find info on it.
I'm planning on installing one on my truck next month... just because I had extra money I didn't know what to do with, and it could, maybe, do some good.

I would do what jonnymagnum said (I think I've said this before ) and see how that goes.
I've heard ticking is "normal" on most Dodge motors (some people say, "If it ain't tickin', it ain't runnin," however my motor has been 99.99% tick free), but knocking is not normal at all.

AHHHHHHHHHH FRUSTRATIONS. well today i started my truck up and went to my girlfriends house NO knock whatsoever when i first started it and i though well thats weird then BAM started knocking out of no where. then it warmed up and went away so i went out to her house. when i came home i pulled in the driveway and listened to the motor. i hear a light tapping from the bottom end. then i get back in the truck and it idles for a minute or 2 and then out of no where BANG BANG BANG sounds like its coming from just in front of the transmission. I'm thinking i got some issues in the bottom end what do you guys think?

My truck(97 5.2L)has a light knock on start-up sometimes especially if it has been sitting for a couple of days. It's just the lifters making noise until they get pumped full of oil- takes about 5 to 15 seconds depending on temperature. Every 318 mopar I have owned did this at some point due to high mileage and worn lifters and/or dirty oil, /low oil level. Also my truck has never liked 87 octane gas even when it was brand new -spark knock and poor performance. I onlyfeed it89 octane or better.

ok i'm pretty sure i've got a blown head gasket and a bent rod in the engine. Anyone know if you can drop the oil pan without taking the engine completly out? i know some vehicles if you undo the motor mounts and lift it up partially you can do this.
