Default 2001 4.7 tune up

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum and working on my dakota. Let me tell you about it first. Its a 2001 ext cab
slt with the 4.7L. Shes now got about 120K on the odometer. To my knowledge its never had any thing done to it except regular maintaince. Oil change, air filter, misc fluids, brake pads and what not. I use sythetic blend castrol and change it about every 5K miles. My wife who was my girlfriend at the time in 2002 bought the truck with about 28K miles. She drove it in college commuting about 80 miles one way three days a weekfor four years. She decidedafter a while that its a V8 so itneeds a growl to it. So we went down to the local muffler shop and had true duals put on. Ithas the Cat removed but still has the smallersensors under the manifold. Now I'm driving it to school 2 days a week about 65 miles one way. This has been the best little truck, I'v been very impressed with how well its held up (knock on wood). But I think its time for a tune up. I need to get another 120K out of it.

Now, I'll be fair. I am a Chevy man, dont throw rocks at me I'm only under educated. Thats why Im here.
I have not done any of the Plug, wire, cap, and roter because 1'st it has not needed it and 2nd not sure how or where? Now Educate me What to do first and how to do it.

Thanks
Keith

First off there is no wires, cap and rotor. the most you can do is change the plugs (i perfer champions Not the platinums), and maybe change the air filter, oh and possibly a fuel filter. the fuel filter might not be possible becuase it might be above the fuel tank.

Each cylender has its own individual coil so thats why theres no wires, cap, and rotor. you can replace the 8 coils if you want, but there about 32$ apiece X 8.

hope this helps a little good luck!

Thanks 01dodgedriver.
Okay that helps. I have read that most people don’t prefer the platinums. But from what you have told me all that I can do is change plugs, fuel filter, and coils? Also remember I’m new, what are people referring to when they say they blew a cel? Back to the coils how many miles should these be good for, do I really need to change them?

As far as I know, to replace the fuel filter on your year, you will have to replace the fuel pump as well (it is one unit, someone correct me if I am wrong.) Your owner's manual will tell you when the coils will need to be replaced. I would suggest running a drop-in K&N filter at the least, if you haven't already. All fluid changes would need to be done; i.e. radiator, tranny, rear dif, etc. You should replace your belt and check to see if any fuses have popped over its lifetime. Running an intake mainfold cleaner, such as Sea Foam, through the vacuum line, running off your brake booster will help eat up any carbon deposits that have formed.

Make sure you run the Sea Foam as slow as possible. It will work better and it won't set off a CEL.
