went to drive my truck today to go get brakes for my dads truck and was letting it warm up while i cleaned the snow off of it and when i got in it to leave the check engine light was on, when i pulled the code it was a cylinder 5 misfire detected, it did this when i got the truck, but since then i have replaced the bosch platinums and now am using brand new champions, any ideas what could be causing this problem, and how to make it stop, it only seems to happen when the truck is started after being given a chance to cool down, and then wont do it again until it sits, sorry for the long post and any help would be appreciated,

almost forgot, driveability is not affected at all by this problem

 

could be a bad plug...very rare but it does happen, if they get drooped etc

 

i doubt it bc i personally gapped each one of them so that i know they are the right gap, and then i switched it with the plug in cylinder 3 and have not gotten the error on a different cylinder, just on cylinder 5 im starting to think that its something with the cylinder when its starting cold, any ideas???

 

have you checked the wires. It could be arking off somthing, causing a misfire.

also check your connections from the distributor to the plug, did you just replace the plugs? Or did you do wires also and did you loob them?

 

i only changed the plugs as it has been below freezing here in jersey lately, most of the time single digits, putting the new plugs in took an hour to do 1 or 2 plugs at a time then run inside and warm up, i was planning on doing the wires once it warmed up a bit, and no i did not lube it at all, what do u suggest using, and where is the distributor cap so that i can check that out for connectivity as well as the plug end and any more ideas would be great thanks

 

petroleum grease, and sorry i misread your post i some reason thought you had a 02 Dakota, yes change your cap rotor and wires...

 

ok well i guess thats a project for me to do over spring break which will hopefully be warm enough that i can do it outside, but for now ill just try to grease the connections and make sure that theyre all tight, but im still open to other ideas if youhave them ill let you know what fixes it

nope changed the wires today, managed to get the garage long enough, changed the cap and rotor with it and started it up and let it idle less than 5 min the light came back on for the misfire, these are brand new wires, idk what could be causing it now, any ideas that would not include tearing the engine apart to fix would be great, idk what could be giving the this problem, SOMEONE please help

 

it could be a clogged injector.
