Default Gas Mileage ?

My first tank I barely averaged 13 mpg with the bulk of this being hiway. This is the 4.7L and I hoped it would do better. Maybe it will once it breaks in ?

Also are these things part time 4wd in that the rear wheels only turn and the fronts kick in if it senses slippage or is it awd all the time? If its putting power to all 4 wheels all the time then that will suck gas more.

Well if you aren't running E85 you should be doing better. The Durango is AWD with 4 X 4. I think it is a 40/60 split from fwd/rwd. Someone will need to confirm that.

Wishbone:

You will find that with SUV's in general, there will be little if any difference in fuel economy between part time and full time 4x4/AWD.

Most postings I have seen from gen 1 owners like myself are seeing 12-14 around town, and 16-18 hwy when not towing,

The gen 2 Hemi seems to run a bit better on the hwy if you keep your foot out of it.

I swapped my part time transfer case out for an AWD unit back in Feb of 07, and the mpg difference is 1 mpg or less.

Don't forget that our D's have the aerodynamics of a barn door, and weigh in around 4800 lbs.

The true mpg cannot be calculated after the first tank. You never know how much empty space remains after a refill. My 4.7 AWD with Michelin Latitude X-Ice 265/70/17 runs about12.5 mpg, 50/50 city/hwy in winter. BTW, the computer shows about 14.5, which cannot be explained by an additional inch in tire diameter.

MrN you are correct, that transfer split of 40/60 fwd/rwd in the 4X4 AWD systemis accurate. Just incase you were still wondering...

MY 05 Hemi went from averaging 17-18 MPG to just barely 13MPG. At first I attributed it to the colder winter temps taking longer for it to warm up but this last tank was 13.3MPG and the outside temps were a little bit up. I just went over 36K on milage and have not changed the plugs yet. It still runs great, plenty of power and doesn't miss a beat, but that milage - I'm hopefull that it's because of the plugs.

My 04 Durango with the 4.7L gives me horrible city mileage if I drive it with any enthusiasm. I've seen 11.5 to 13.5 city. The best I could ever do when trying to drive gently in the city\suburbs was 15mpg. The highway is a different story though. I was getting 23mpg @ 70 when I first got it and I've seen 24.5 @ 70 with the cold air intake I installed. I'm pretty happy with the highway mileage for what this behometh is...but I do mostly suburb driving.
