Gas fill overflow on my 06 durango
Purchased a 2006 Used in December of 2009. Been having this same problem for three months now (probably why it was traded in). Finally came to the conclusion that it wasn't me that was the problem and found this thread after some research. Long story Short:
Contacted Dodge, just received a call back from my case manager, here is what he had to say: (synapsis)
"Dodge is not responsible for the problem",and: "you are not entitled to any charity because you have not invested anything in Dodge (bought used)", furthermore: "you should have been aware of the problem and not purchased the vehicle in the first place."
At least he was an honest s***head...
but I still can't believe the gall of this guy.
I have filed a complaint with NHTSA, we'll see if this does anything.
Also, before I purchased the vehicle I paid the local Dodge Dealer to inspect it for defects. Obviously it wasn't in their best interest to disclose a potential fatal defect such as this, however, this will be the basis for my complaint with the State Attorney Generals Office. Hopefully this ought to do it.

Believe it or not, but this was not some guy at the local dealership telling me this.
This guy was a vehicle complaint case-management supervisor at the national 1-800 chrysler number.
His info is "Nick" employee number NC589.

I hate this problem... We bought the car (SUV) new in 2006 and this didn't happen until about a year ago. The dealer didn't know what we were talking about either, then promptly went out of business. Now we're out of warranty. I'm thinking of trying to get to a junk yard and get a tank.... maybe we can play with the venting and come up with a solution. My wife is afraid of pumping gas herself, so now I have to every single time.
Have the same issue on 2006 Durnango. Dodge dealer in South Carolina told me that it is the evap canister and it was about $300 to replace. Not covered under secondary warranty I have.
Has anyone replaced this themselves?

I have the same problem. I have an 06'. The recall that I came across was for 05's. I did some research & I found that if I stop pumping & pull the nozzle out for about 10-15 seconds...it doesn't overfill anymore. I have tried this my last 3 or 4 fill-ups & so far its worked. I have not really looked at the vent yet but this seems to work. Give it try.
It's interesting that some of you are having problems getting Dodge to step up to the plate on this. I had the same problem on my 2008 Aspen out of warranty, and got help from Chrysler. Same problem - fuel pump would shut off, and then gas would proceed to spill out everywhere.
I did the research on the 05 recall, and my symptoms were identical. I called corporate, and they asked me to have it diagnosed. As expected, the dealer found that the fuel filler pipe and tank needed replacement. There's a flap in there that shuts to keep fuel from escaping when it expands, and it wasn't working properly.
Chrysler was very interested in taking care of this for me, presumably because of liability concerns. I made it clear on my call to them that I had read the recall language for the 05, and made particular note of the potential for fuel spillage in a rollover accident. They called me while I was at the dealership, and then asked to speak with the service advisor. They told the service advisor to do the repair using the lifetime powertrain warranty, even though I am the 2nd owner and do not have that warranty. The SA disagreed with them, but did it anyway.
Total out of pocket to me was the deductible for the lifetime powertrain warranty - I think it was $150+ tax. I made it clear that I would be collecting my refund of that amount when the recall is broadened to all years 05+, as this is becoming a widespread problem.
I hope this helps.

Glad to hear you got your problem solved by why pay Dodge a $150 fee when it is a DEFFECTIVE PART on their end. I have the $100 deductible and was told to use it by Dodge Corp and that I could collect it back when and if my VIN ever became included in the RECALL for the Dodge vehicle that spew out gas when they try to fill up. Of coarse my dealer knew nothing of the RECALL or has never heard of this issue from anyone else before. Going to try the local news station to see how they like that. With enough of us complaining about it, perhaps Dodge will be the next Toyota.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I think it's better to get the repair done before beating your war drum.
