Default Heater motor noise on '04

My wife's '04 Durango will have a whining noise coming from the dash area when running the heater. This has happened for a while now and I think it's time to fix it. It does NOT do it when running the A/C or when using the vent fan in a cool mode....only when the heat is going. The sound completely goes away at 30mph (almost like turning off a switch...it just instantly disappears...does not fade out) and then returns as soon as the speed gets down to 15mph. It will continue to whine until 30mph is reached again.

Any ideas? Is this just the blower motor bearings going bad? It still blows great heat, its just noisey and annoying!

thanks in advance!

Same blower for heat when using AC. If no noise in AC mode, not the blower motor.

Sounds like the heater core is loose and vibrating, or heat is expanding/contracting areas allowing something to rattle.

Drop the glovebox, remove the insert and listen closely for the culprit. Then fix it once found. If it is INSIDE the ducting, not a good thing.

Its more of a whinning noise (like a squeal or something) than a vibration noise. It seems to come from the glove box area. I'll try to get more info, but its strange that it complety goes away at 30mph and comes right back when you slow down to 15mph. Its like a light switch being turned on and off....not a gradual increase or decrease in noise. Its either there or not instantly......

Does your speedometer 'bounce' while the sound is occuring? My Coronet needs a new speedometer cable and it will make a wierd whining sound as the needle jumps all over the place. I am not sure if modern cars have cables anymore though,

Nope....rock solid. It is definitely heater related, as I can turn the fan off while it is making noise and it instantly goes away. It does NOT do this when I have the temp set to cool (regardless if the A/C is running or not).. ONLY with the temp selector on heat.

I have the exact same issue, though I think it's happened once or twice while cooling, as well (can't be 100% certain because its controlling by temp rather than heat/cool). It's definitely a whining sound. It could be a vibration, but my first thought was blower related, though that doesn't explain why it happens more or exclusively when the heat is on.

It hadn't happened in so long that I forgot about it, but it popped up a few days ago when it got a little cold.

I'm still under warranty, so I'll let you know what it is when they fix it. I'm just irritated because I had it in for a warranty repair a couple weeks ago and I could have saved myself the second $100 deductible if I got it taken care of at that time. It just hadn't happened in so long, I completely forgot about it.

I was planning on it, but it stopped again. It's been off and on for over a year, but it stops for long enough periods of time that I'm not sure I'll be able to reproduce it for them at the dealership.

Brought mine to the dealer today and they found a cracked vacuum hose in the eng compartment. It is the hose that comes off of the air filter box, runs around the engine and towards the back by the firewall. It then T's to the right and left. On the left (passenger side) is where the split was. They wanted something crazy like a $100 to fix it. I will replace the hose myself for a few cents by cropping out the bad part and splicing in a new hose piece. The mechanic said this would work perfectly.

I'll let you know when I do it and if it works. Right now I'm in the middle of replacing the front driver's side hub assembly......
