Durango is Smoking and Burning Oil
I have an 06 Dodge Durango 2x4 with a 4.7 liter SFI, 92000 miles. I have noticed that when my vehicle idles for prolonged time that it will smoke really bad on take off. Steady stream of thick white smoke that smells of oil. It does this for about a minute or so. Also have noticed the smoke 5-10 seconds after start-up. Also the check engine light has come on and gone off twice, with the code P0344. The motor does not runs rough,no start up problems, burns about a quart of oil a week. I travel 100 miles back and forth to work weekly in city traffic. I read up on the engine light code and have not matched any of my symptoms on what it can cause, seeing that the motor runs smoothly.I have ruled out a head gasket seeing that the coolant level has not changed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Your oil consumption is horrific, causing the smoke and likely will cost you all new O2 sensors and a new Cat too once fixed.
That is a ton of burned oil leading towards something even worse.
Tell any shop you are using that much oil and they will be able to quickly locate the culprit.

I have checked the coolnt levels and they remain the same as it keeps burning oil. Checked the rear main just to ensure it wasnt leaking and it wasnt.I have an appt set up with a shop monday morning to bring it in. What I am wondering is if this problem sounds like valve guides? Could the rpm change from idle to going down the street be causeing the valves to sling oil into the cyilinders?
I had the same problem with my Hemi in my 05. I had to threaten the dealership a lawsuit, because I never tripped any codes. At the end of the day I had all new O2s and the valve guides redone. Hopefully you have the 100K powertrain on it. Knowing dodge like I do. The dealership will continue you to stall until it is too late.

These symptoms are classic signs of bad valve seals and/or worn valve guides.
The seals can be replaced with the heads on the motor, but IMO once you have narrowed it to them, I would pull the heads and just have them redone completely.
Probably could get that done for ~$500 or so if you DIY, or double that to have someone do it for you.
