2004 5.7L 4x4 Tie Rods
So I was told by the guys at the tire shop the other day that my passenger inner tie rod was bad and needed to be replaced. They of course wanted about 2 hours worth of labor to replace it and I told them I would do it myself.
Upon looking for the passenger inner tie rod at the local auto supply stores, I found out that Dodge has made two different ones with different thread sizes at the rack end. A 24mm and a 16mm. Well they have been able to find the 24mm one in their catalogs without problem, so I ordered that one on the chance that it was the correct size. Well it wasn't my lucky day today when I went to install the thing as it is the 16mm at rack end not the 24mm. So needless to say I had to put it all back together with a bad part while I wait about a week for the one with the 16mm to be delivered to the local auto parts store.
A concern that I have is that Auto Zone has stated they actually can't order just the tie rods, but you have to order the entire rack and pinion which comes with the tie rods. I shouldn't have to replace my entire rack and pinion for ONE DANG PART that is removable and replaceable. O'reily and Advance have both told me that they have to submit a request to corporate or something to actually get the cost and availability on the one with the 16mm threads at rack end. WHAT A JOKE.
To end it all I'm extremely frustrated at this thing now. A tie rod should not have to be a week order part. This is a common replacement on any number of vehicles with 50,000 + miles on them. (I have 175,000 miles) So in reality I have done well with the OEM tie rod.
So has anyone else had trouble finding tie rods for your 2nd Gen Durango?

Thanks for the link, but they don't sell any tie rods for the Durango. The one that I'm in need of is the passenger inner tie rod with a 16mm thread at the rack end.

***Update***
Called the dealer, and they have stated to me they don't sell the passenger inner tie rod with a 16mm thread at the rack end. They have stated to me that I am most likely going to have to replace the entire rack which comes with the inner tie rods. Not to mention that I also most likely will have to replace the steering shaft as well. Ugh... Let the online hunt begin,

Have a machine shop modify a 24mm to 16mm or junkyard

I had my 2007 4x4 Durango fail an inspection due to the tie rod end that was replaced at my dealer as it was under warranty at the time. I would assume the tie rod end would be an easy part to procure without buying a new steering assembly. Rockauto has Moog ineer tie rod end 16mm part #ES800367 on their site for $49.00. Classic cars are so much easier to find parts and fix,

Didn't think of going the machine shop route. Can't find out till Monday as all the machine shops here are closed today.
Found the one from Rock Auto earlier and have it ordered. Should be here Wednesday.
Problem with a junkyard steering part is that I am likely to have to replace it again sometime soon.
Thanks to all those that took time to help.

Your absolutely right. It shouldn't be as difficult as it has to procure an inner tie rod. Advance and O'reily auto only stock and sell the 24mm inner at rack end. As for the 16mm at rack end they are unsure of availability and price. Autozone doesn't even stock the inners at all they only sell the entire rack assembly with inners. As for the dealer, I spoke with my local dealer and they don't have any specs on the part so are unsure if it is a 24mm or 16mm thread on the actual part. They asked for my r & p part number which doesn't even match the two p/n they have listed for my D. So I called a dealer that has one in stock and asked them to pull it to verify the part. It is of course the 24mm thread at rack end.
The part number that I'm looking for is #EV800573. It is a Moog inner tie rod 16mm at rack end and 16mm on outer end. Rockauto only had one in stock and ordered it earlier today. Should be here Wednesday. Till then I guess I'll leave my D parked.
I haven't had the opportunity yet to own a classic car so wouldn't know about parts availability for them. I can say though I have a '93 Chevy Caviler still lying around and I know that parts for it are more than plenty.
