Also make sure your dash switch is in AWD potion before u put new shift motor in . And after new install i would not turn the dash shift switch to any gears if u have the SVC 4x4 light on spend $100 bucs get light off first before trying to shift to 4x4 high or low ok .Think it is the best due to all the issue those durango or 244D Gen11 transfer case have had .ok Hope this help anyone that has these issue with 2004 Dodge durango .William

Mine started out with the shift motor making noise when I opened the passenger door or clicked the unlock button. Then the svc 4wd light would come on and then go off. Then the 4lo light would come on and you could feel the 4x4 kicking in on slow turns. I got it out of 4 lock and when it was still in AWD I unplugged the shift motor. The svc 4wd light is on all the time now, but it drives normally. I have a mechanic that is going to change out the shift motor. Thanks for the info..

I'm trying to check those things now. It's certainly a long process. Thanks

Yes there no shortage of wires in the durango for sure ,Is your a limited edition ? Mine is and every option that made we have and with that there more things that could break or short out .Be sure and look at your front control real close the wire & also look where your small plugs plug into and on one side of that fcm u can clean the clear plastic off and look to see if any burned spots ,I may have pictures of the one i had to replace that was burned i will look and get to u if needed ,stay patient and hope u get it back on road .

also have you taken the shift motor out of transfer case yet ? And if u did shake it and see if it sounds like something loose in it .Mine sounded like a bunch of rocks were in it i replaced it & that fixed it .My new shift motor did not make any noise when i shaked it .

I have the limited as well. I am still checking the wiring under the hood under the fuse block. I have figured out which transfer case shift motor I have but I have not taken it to my mechanic yet. I hope to do that next week. I went and got the wife a Kia Sorento over the weekend. Thats the first new vehicle I've bought in 8 years. Its nice though. I'll post back later of what I find.

Sounds good If u have ant question give me a yell .And if u are able to that transfer shift motor not real hard to replace .They make it sound hard but its really not as long as u have a couple jacks ok .I did find out when i removed transfer shift motor i shook it and there was a rattle in it like some thing was loose in it & the new one did not rattle .

When you replaced the shift motor, did you have to loosen the manifold pipes to move them a little to get them out of the way? I read a post where someone did. I have a mechanic friend that has a lift at his house so that should make it easier.

No i did not need to loosen the manifold bolts . I will tell u how i did it ok .I jacked my durango up on both axles and put 4 jack stands 2 on each axle so i could work on it .I am 280 lbs so i needed some belly room ok .Then i used a bottle jack and a piece of 2x4 maybe 5 inch long and put it where the motor and transmission bolt together just jack it enough for support ..Then u can unbolt the 4 transfer case that hold it crossmember after removing them 4 bolts .Then take like scissor jack and u may need to use a few 2x4 for putting jack on for height k use scissor jack to lift up transfer case maybe 3 inch off the cross member . Now remove cross member like 8 bolts .Then u can get the transfer case motor a lot easier .U get electric plug unplugged and take the 3 bolts there a !0 m to get them out and pull the old motor out .Then u will see the splines on transfer case and then u will have to make sure your transfer case is in AWD potion before putting new shift motor .The way u manually using a #8 vise grips to shift the motor it moves pretty easy but do not strip or damage those splines ok Now your i believe is 2 speed transfer case right you i think its a AWD ,High 4x4 & low 4x4 if so its a 2 speed .so looking at the splines on transfer case u might have to turn the splines .so frist make sure truck still on jack stands tires no touching ok Then turn your key on { not running not started ] put your AWD dash switch in AWD & put your truck in Neutral potion and leave it there .Then go under the car and looking up at the spines on transfer case the spline has a spot that has a missing gear that spot needs to be on the bottom looking at you ok that is AWD potion .Then your new motor should line up and your transfer case bolts should line up do not force it u may have to move the spine a bit to line up ok .Its sounds hard but it really is not ok .Be safe and do not get hurt ok .Hope this helps any question let me know k
