2007 5.7L 4X4 Rear Diff Leak?

Default 2007 5.7L 4X4 Rear Diff Leak?

So without getting under the vehicle and investigating closer...it looks like the rear diff is leaking at the shaft seal? Leak is definitely not out of the pumpkin seal. Don't really want to crack it open but if I have to...

The diff fluids haven't been changed yet and I think the Rango has about 54K on it. I was planning on swapping out the fluids soon...then I found the leak after it sitting for a week.

chrysler 8-1/4 rear diff. (did this come with anything else?)

PG:

Sounds like pinion seal. The part is cheap, but requires removal of the drive shaft and pinion yoke to replace the seal. A good shop will charge ~$200 or less to do this. While you are at it, might as well replace the lube inside with either M1 or Royal Purple.

Same thing on my '04. Left side. Was charged three large for the job. This was the seal and a rear diff gasket and fluid service. My rear diff takes synthetic 75w 140.

Thanks guys dealer was going to charge $245 until I questioned the time required to swap out the seal. It down to $90 after I said I'd also do the front/rear diff fluid and transfer case fluid changes. I felt that one but it is necessary ($200) fair enough since I dont have to deal with the leftovers or time it'll take (which I dont have anymore of). Ill post a final cost and if Im happy with the service next week.

Do let us know how things go. I would like to know if they also replace the crush sleeve.

To make the repair, when they remove the pinion nut and then pull the yoke and seal, the preload on the pinion bearings is released.

It is my understanding that the crush sleeve is a single use piece, and should be discarded and replaced.

Not sure on the crush sleeve. The work request only replaced the one seal and the diff oil. no more leaking. I do love it when they tell you there's more things worng with the vehicle. Then when you tell them you do not want the outer tie tods replaced because they are slightly loose, they act like you are heading out to kill baby seals with a 2X4 with a nail through the end of it. I'll get to it when I hit a bump and jump a lane. Right now the truck won't be seing much more than 25mph anyway.

Last June I had the left seal go out on the rear end. I had it replaced and had a diff service done. Was three hundred out the door.

Most recently I had to have my entire rear end rebuilt. Shaft bearings and seals, drive shafts, carrier bearings and cups, pinion bearings and cups, crush sleeve, and fluid exchange.

Take note that replacing the drive shafts was not easy. The right one isn't even available from the dealer as it is back ordered with none being made. The left one is only available from the warehouse in Chicago or Boston and very few dealers have them in stock. Ended up having to get some used ones from a salvage yard.

Was roughly 1000 bones out the door. Could have put in a used rear end for about 200 cheaper but like a transmission I rebuild something before I put a used one in.

BTW I have close to 200,000k.
