Can I have your opinion?
Hello all, My name is Jason and I have a 2005 Durango Slt. It has a 4.7 with 8200 miles on it and as of now im getting around 13 miles to the gallon.I have an after market cold air intake on it but really havent seen a diffirence other than being louder. Id like to put an exhaust system on it but im not sure what kind.. Whats your opinion on what type of exhaust and maybe a chip?
Thanks Jason
Thanks Jason
Welcome to DF
I haven't seen much difference either. I know this sounds dumb, keep 40 psi in the tires, clean air filter and keep the rig at 55 mph. You may gain a few miles per gallon.

Jason:
Are you the original owner of your D? Have the spark plugs ever been changed?
The 4.7 is spec'ed to have new plugs at 30K intervals. You can run them longer, say to 40 or 50K, but 82K would be overdue.
Our Durangos are good at many things, but sipping gas especially around town is not one of them.
With eveything in good shape and no towing, you should see 16-18 mpg hwy with your 4.7 and 12-14 mpg in town.
Your D weighs ~5100 pounds, and has the aerdynamics of a modern barn door. It takes horsepower and torque tp move that kind of weight around.
It would not hurt to change the fluids in your axles, trans, and transfer case also. The factory coolant fill is only good for 5 years OR 100K so you might put that on the list also.

I got 18.5 in my 4.7 o7 D today going to Kansas City at 70 with windows down, no AC on and a half tank of 89 octane and a half tank of E85. to tell you the truth, to get 261 mile on almost 14 gallons was kind of a shock. On the way back to Bentonville, Arkansas, I started having transfer case and/or 4wd switch problems but still managed to get back on more than a half tank, after I filled up just outside K.C.
