2006 Durango Stuck In Park
I'm new to the forum and haven't found a thread that addresses my issue, so please help!
I have two Durangos; a 2001 and a 2006. My 2006 won't shift out of park and has no brake lights. I replaced the brake pedal switch and checked all fuses; no luck. I also tested both the old and new switch in my 2001, they both work fine. The steering wheel moves freely when she's running so it seems that the problem is not in the column. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!!!

I should also mention that the owner before me (I'm second owner, bought it from a dealership) apparently installed, or had someone install, a towing package with questionable wiring, which was wired into the driver's side tail light housing. We didn't discover this until after we located a blown 20a fuse under the hood, which we replaced (I have no idea what it was to; the underhood diagram does not match the diagram in the owner's manual). When I tested the tail lights (Not brake lights, just tail), smoke began to come from the tail light housing. I immediately turned them back off. When we removed the housing, we found the shoddy wiring had melted. We disconnected the towing lights completely and rechecked the earlier-mentioned blown fuse, which was still good. That being said, the problem remains. No brake lights, and she won't shift. It is worth clarifying also that the turn signals do work.
The brake switch circuit needs power and a ground to take the shift interlock so you can move the shifter out of park. You can try to release the cable to get the transmission out of park.
