05 Durango just quits??
I have a 2004 Ram 1500, 4X4 with the Hemi & 5 speed automatic. In February of this year we were on a business trip to Florida and the check engine light came on. I pulled into an Auto Zone, they said it was a EGR valve error. They reset the thing & away I went. The check engine light came on and off periodically during the trip. While we were driving around down there I noticed that if I was driving in traffic and had to abruptly let off the gas I would feel kind of a funny clunk in the transmission. I just love it when new problems arrive when you're 2 days drive from home. A week or so after I got home I started to notice a slight hesitation when I depressed the gas pedal just a little. A day or so later I was driving at a slow speed on a rural road and noticed the truck was suddenly hard to steer. My first thought was that I'd got one of the front tires off of the edge of the road. I noticed the tach was on zero so I popped it into neutral and restarted the engine. I made an appointment at the local Dodge dealer. Since on one of my previous visits I was led to believe a problem with the truck really didn't exist I got the service manager in the truck & we went for a ride. He could feel the hesitation and surging when driving at a steady speed as well as the clunk when you let off the gas pedal quickly. They called me later and said all of the problems were caused by a defective throttle body. The only problem is that they were back ordered and they didn't know when they would get them in. Later that week I had to go to New Jersey. The first time it stalled on the trip was when my wife was driving shortly after we left the house. She was really thrilled with the thought of the truck quitting at random. It quit a couple more times while we were in NJ. It's real exciting when you are pulling a trailer in a strange area on a narrow bridge with guard rails on both sides and you notice you can no longer steer the truck! After about a months wait I recieved a notification from the dealer that my part was in. And guess what, Chrysler would not cover it since it's not an internally lubricated part. I've spent the last 3 days trying to get some answers from the folks at Chrysler. They will not return my calls or give me straight answers. How can you say you don't have a defective product when you have this many potentially life threatening failures on your vehicles. I do not have a good feeling about our friends at Chrysler, time to go back to GM before this thing kills or hurts me or some member of my family. It's up to around a dozen sudden loss of power events.
If you have a Dodge with a 5.7 hemi, be careful, it wants to hurt you.

I have a 05' Durango w/ 5.7 Hemi..i have had the check engine light come on after pulling out of the drive way twice.....took it to the dealer and of course they cant find anything.my milage is at 38000 and my wife drives it only in town...it doesnt see much highway time...we have not had it happen since...we are at a higher elevation in colorado...i doubt that has any merit but thought i might mention that...My question is about tandem towing with about a total weight of 4500# has anyone used the durango for tandem towing or any towing for that matter and how does it perform with this weight....especially with the inclines that i will be facing....steep mountainous areas....any input, advice or thoughts would be appreciated .....
I own a 2006 Dodge Durango with Hemi V8 and experienced this problem a couple of months ago with my wife, sister-in-law, and a friend.
I was coming down a gently sloping road around 35-45mph. The road bends to the right. It's one of those fun roads that dips down and then turns up a hill to merge into another road. You know, those ones that you just cruise on.
Anyways, all of a sudden I realized it wasn't turning as easily and that the vehicle had completely stalled out. I was able to turn it into a parking lot.
We got out and examined things. Checked the oil. There did seem to be a higher sent of gasoline. (If this happens to anyone, can you check and see if your oil smells more strongly of gasoline after it happens.) My original thought was that the engine must have been transitioning from 8 to 4 cyclinders and botched and stalled itself. However, seeing as '04 &'05 models have the same problem. I am doubtful.
Of course the dealership said they found nothing. That there was a record noting that if the transmission fluid is low that it could cause a stall on a turn. But the transmission fluid was not significantly low.
My wife is pregnant. If this anything were to happen to her because of this issue. So help me God....
BTW...this should answer the question of whether this happens with '06 models. The answer is "Yes".

We bought my 05 Durango with the 4.7L engine in February 06. I had noticed the fluctuating rpm gage and could feel the idle of my engine before it ever started shutting off. I never had any warning lights come on. The first time it happened I had just filled my tank and was turning left to go around the pump to get out of the gas station and it just shut off. I took it to a dealer and they told me if they couldn't duplicate it they can't fix it. The second time (I am almost positive the tank was full again) it shut off while backing out of a drive way (going to the right). I took it too a different dealer and they tried to tell me the same thing... I politely explained to them that I was not a liar and that if they couldn't make it duplicate the problem that wasn't my concern, but that it was my concern to be driving my children around in a vehicle that decides to shut off whenever it chose too. They flashed my computer it seemed to help it for a couple of weeks but then again after I filled the tank up I was slowing down for a red light and it just shut off I was not turning at all this time. Called the dealer to let them know the flash didn't work. They were waiting on some type of update from Chrysler and it took a couple of months. It seems to do it most when the air conditioner is on (I live in FL - it is always on) and when it is very humid outside. It doesn't have to be the case but I notice that the idle drops more during this time. I brought my vehicle to the dealer on the way home from work one day... I was really annoyed at the way my practically brand new vehicle was acting like a piece of **** clunker. I sat in my vehicle whilethe a service tech and the service manager stood outside my running vehicle. The tech was leaningwith his arm on my side mirror and was finally able to feel the idle that way. They finally changed the throttle positioning sensor and it seems to have helped the stalling issue completely, although I have noticed recently that the idle has started bouncing up and down again but not like before.
I also have this strange vibration that I feel mostly while the a/c is on and it feels like it goes all the way to the rear axle. This seems to have only started since the throttle positioning sensorwas changed and of course it is now out of warranty... I am waiting for it to just blow up.
I wish everyone luck with their vehicles.

i bought a 2004 durango with the magnum engine brand new. thank god i never had this problem it could also be you guys have a different engine and year then me. i use my car everyday to travel for 30 mins day and night. my car has about 69,000 miles on it of so much i use it for work and nothing has ever happened to the car.
Our 2005 Hemi Durango stalled intermitantly or so we thought...we took it back to dealer on several occasions but they could not reproduce the problem.
Then I noticed a pattern...
When we filled it up at gas station, we would pull out and at the first stop about 300 feet up the road at traffic light as we were slowing down it would just stall, start right back up and be fine. I could reproduce this week after week 3-400 feet slowing down after filling up. Now that the truck has about 45k on it , it healed itself for now.
Anyone else that has the stalling problem see if it happens after you fill up and let me know.

My 05 Hemi D does the same thing. Everytime I fill it up with gas when the engine is warm and then drive on surface streets home, it stalls when I'm either decelerating or sitting at a stop light. It cranks back up pretty quickly, but it usually stalls several times between the gas station and the house. When the engine completely cools off (overnight), it doesn't stall again until the next time we fill up.
When I'm traveling and jump off the interstate to get gas, it "misses" a time or two after I'm back on the interstate andup to speed but it has never stalled in that situation.
I've taken it totwo local dealers and both of them claim they haven't had anyone elsereport the same problem. I've had all of the possible TSB's performed, but nothing has changed. I got the "shop foreman" at one of the stealerships somewhat interested just before I left for vacation a week ago, so I intend to go backsoon and get him to ride with me to the gas station to experience the stalling first hand. We'll see if anything comes of it.

I had the same problem. They tried everything and as a last ditch effort they replaced the fuel pump. No more problems and that was 8 months ago. I had a friend who had the same problem, replaced the fuel pump and problem solved.
The gas theory is very interesting to me. I actually have not had my '05 konk out on me for some months now (knock on wood), BUT I got to thinking one day about any patterns and I will swear the last time I did it, I had just stopped to fill up on my way home, after havingdriven about 30 minutes (warm engine), and then drove about 2 miles before it konked out in a parking lot while I was making a right hand turn.
I've also noticed it idling funny but didn't think much of it till some of you also reported it. Very interesting......

We have an 05 durango 4.7 and it started stalling also. I am about to do a tune-up and change gas. I will post my results. I am pretty disappointed being that it only has 70K on it and my honda accord has 261K and has never stalled or had rough idle. I am going to clean the throttle body, Mass airflow sensor too. If there is an accident as a result of this stalling, I will get it running long enough to crash it though the dealership walls.....I bought it since i wanted my wife and kidsin a new vehicle that I thought would be reliable...it has been except the few times it stalled and then yesterday it stalled about 7 times. I'll let ya know what happens.
