Default 06 durango doesnt need a chipped key

I bought a 2006 dodge durango SXT from a individual and only got one key the fob is gone he said it got broken off, I have to use the key to unlock the door and had another regular key made and its starts it just fine no chip, can anyone tell me how this is possible I have a 2005 f150 no way it starts without the chipped key. It has just died twice for no reason but started right back, is there a connection to the key or just a coinkidink

I have an '06 Durango SLT. Just to test, I took the "guts" out of the plastic fob and the truck starts fine. I don't believe it has / needs a chip.

Okay, but did you try opening the locked doors with the non-fob key?

Yes, I opened the driver's side only to get in.

The alarm should have been triggered and you would not be able to start the D until the key fob was used either to click unlock doors or to start the D. The fob is the only thing to disable the alarm at that point. Do you have an alarm? Maybe I missed the point you are making in the thread.

I am bringing this up because I want to help get the correct info to the forum and also find out why I cannot use a non-chip key which is probably due to the alarm.

This is what I know some Durangos do not need a chipped key to open the doors or start the Durango mine being one of those I can open the door or start it with any key I have made. Called the dealer today about getting a key fob and he said mine was one of the unusuall ones because it didnt need a chipped key or have an alarm he ran my vin number to figure this out. Anyway for just the fob no chip in it they want 167.00 and another 80.00 to program it. My next question in cant I buy a key fob get the key cut and programed by a locksmith

My understanding of your situation is that you don't need a chip so you could buy a fob and there are procedures for programming your own door fob and you could probably pick one of those up cheap. I think you must already have one fob to program another. So you wouldn't need a locksmith to make the fob work.

Also, if you don't need a chip key then why not take an existing key to say Home Depot or something and have them copy one for less?

Default I have a 2006 Durango no chip key

I have a 2006 Durango sxt and I bought it from a used car lot without a key fob or chip key.. I have no problem with it.. I decided today to call dealership and get a keyless entry remote for it they told me that my Vin comes back as a chip key model and my fob is connected to my key or the vehicle will not crank and run without it .. it will cost me $200 for the ignition switch and another 200 per key and another 55 to have each key programed to car.. I told them it has been running fine without a chip key.. they told me that the ignition system is malfunctioning then..

Question electrical problems

I have a 2005 Durango SLT with the 5.7 Hemi. I bought it from a used car lot. ever since I got it the door locks, interior light and hazard lights only work when the ignition is on. the truck will start without the chipped key and the dash has a red light always blinks while the truck is running. can someone tell me what might be the problem?
