On an '04 model, I would stick with what the owner's manual says. You probably don't have that many miles on your engine and this is a critical time for engine wear, to make sure everything seats correctly.
My SRT-4 is supposed to have an oil change every 3,000 miles with syn oil...that gets expensive, but it's worth it in engine longevity and peace of mind.....[sm=smiley4.gif]

I would more than concure with Dusty on turbo motors. . . learned the hard way. Keep that oil clean.
But. . . for over 30K miles let's say on other vehicles, the rings have seated about as much as they're going to. The bearings and journals are set. You could probably run 5000 miles on synthetic.
I found in my neon (non-turbo) with a 6.5 quart pan and a PH8 filter (practically holds a quart on it's own) and running Mobil 1 that the oil was still clean every time I changed it. I went from a policy of 3K to 5K to where I don't feel too bad as long as I've changed it before 10K. I shoot for about 7500 or so (which is approximately 8 weeks with my driving.) No problems to date. Car got up to about 150,000 before I rebuilt block for a headgasket and cam issues and has about 35,000 since I rebuilt the block.

It's all personal opinion. You know that Chrysler Imperial that's got 2.5 million miles? The dude changed his oil every second day or something like that--low miles but lots of engine hours as a taxi per day.
Personally, I'd be VERY comfortable running 5000 miles, especially after 15000 miles or safer yet 30,000. --Especially if using Mobil 1. But definitely follow Dusty's instruction to get a good break-in first. It's a good idea to keep the oil VERY clean for the first 30,000 because there's still a lot of metal being "shaped" for that long. Consider it "seasoning" the block. I know 30,000 is a lot of miles for people who buy a car and through it back to the wolves at 90,000 miles but . . . hey. . . we're not Honda owners at this forum. Keep your truck for a while. What you do at the break-in can have big effects at 90,000.

There is no reason why you shouldn't switch your oil to synthetic before 30,000 miles.
Vipers and Corvettes (2 examples) come from the factory with synthetic oil. Your engine will still break-in when using synthetic oil. I would run any engine at least 500 to 1000 miles, on petroleum oil before switching to a group 4 synthetic.
Read all the oil analysis results you want here: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/...?ubb=forum;f=3
You'll find plenty of examples of turbocharged engines running 6500 to 10,000 miles without oil changes.
