I have an '04 Durango and am having rotor issues. I had them replaced at 8200 miles under the Service Tag. Then again at 13,000 miles that they did for free at the dealership. I now have 20,000 miles on the vehicle and they have warped again. They are trying to charge me almost $300 to have slotted rotors put on. If anyone has any input as to why they may be warping it would be much appreciated. I was told that warping is not a warranty issue even though they are Mopar parts and these rotors only have 7,000 miles on them. I'm a little frustrated and confused. Thanks for any help.

 

This is a pretty common occurrance with DCX vehicles. The rotors are made with a much softer metal then they used to use, and therefore they warp under the heat. It happens ALOT on the Rams, Durangos, and Dakotas.......the best way to get around this is to go aftermarket.

I switched to slotted rotors and ceramic brakes. It cured my problems and it actually made for less problems with truck as well. I've owned 2 Dakotas and these were the first things I pretty much did once I got both trucks.

What happens, is with the softer metal, the harsh brakes eat the rotors alive and heat them up super fast. This has been a big topic of discussion on a lot of forums. It was one of the bigger gripes on the dakota forum I used to be a member of.....

The best thing I can tell you, is to get away from the MOPAR crapola on this one.....good luck....

I spent about $200 for all of my brake work, but I put them on myself. Brakes and rotors.....

 

jr, is it the rear rotors? I ask this because they are a solid disk. The fronts are vented and cool much easier.

 

I'm having problems with the front rotors. What really gets me is that the tech said that my aftermarket wheels are causing it. Then I showed them that the wheels on my Durango are actually vented better than the factory ones. They really don't know why they keep warping, but I will go with the aftermarket rotors tomorrow. Thanks for the input.

 

I had the drilled and slotted rotors put on yesterday. They are from NAPA and carry a lifetime warranty that also covers warping. Thanks for all input.

I had the exact same problem on my D. I tried everything and finally found the most stupidest thing. The rear automatic adjusters were bad causing the front to do all the work. The rear shoes where not adjusting out to cover the wear of the shoes. Replaced the auto adjusters and problem solved. The problem is the dowel on the shoe were the adjusters pivot is too big and allows for side to side movement which causes the tooth on the auto adjusters to wear off and not grab the adjustment screw. Looked like a manufactures flaw. Bought the full set from NAPA for $15 bucks a side. Remember to change out the dowel. You will see the difference in the openings.

You have to grind the back of the dowel off and drill the hole a small bit bigger and hammer the new dowel in. Make sure you look at the touching surface between the adjusters and the adjusting screw very carefully. The adjuster is not supposed to come out towards you that far. The new ones pivot perfectly.

 

2nd Gen Durangos are 4 wheel disc, so it's a different issue

I HAD FRONT ROTORS PUT ON AT 12,000 MILES DUE TO WARPING. HOWEVER, NOW MY DURANGO SOUNDS LIKE A FREIGHT TRAINING COMING TO THE STOP AS THE SQUEAL IS UNBELIEVABLE. I AM THINKING THIS IS BECAUSE THE PADS WERE NOT REPLACED. HOW ARE THE NAPA ROTORS AND PADS?

HAS ANYONE REPLACED BOTH? I ALSO FIND MY PEDAL IS LOW TO THE FLOOR AND ONLY HAS 18,000 MILES ON IT NOW.[sm=bangbang.gif]
