Default 4.7L Engine rumbling at idle

Hi guys,

I'm having a rumbling at the engine at idle speeds. Mostly happens after been driving for a while. My other car is a v6 Montero Sport with 96k on the odometer (original sparks also) and still feels smooth at any engine speed. I know there's no comparison between this two engines but my -D- is only 5k miles. My -D- is an 2005 SLT with the 4.7L

Any idea? Is this normal for this vehicle?

Thanks,

If by rumbling you mean it kinda surges like it has a pulse to it then yes mine does the same. You'll have to explain it more. It hasn't become bad enough where it's a nuisance.

Sorry... What I'm trying to say is that it feels like a intermitent vibration at the engine at idle speed. Sometimes it feels like the engine will shut-off.

No problem at "surprise" acceleration so I believe is not related to gas source. Any idea?

Thanks,

I noticed it with my 06. It's not really bad, but noticeable. Is the A/C on when this happens?

not to sound like an *ss, but just take it in to the dealer if you have another car to drive while it is in the shop, warrenties are a wonderful thing

Hi there!

Thanks for bring this back again. I was getting worry about anybody having the same problems. I got some more details:

- It happens at idle speed no matter if you have the trans on Drive or Neutral position
- Haven't tested without the A/C. At this moment I have only experieced it with the A/C.
- Day or night driving makes no difference (main lights). "Apparently" not related to low voltage but not sure.
- Mostly happens after being driving a while under stop -n- go situations. Seems to be like when the engine is hot. But the temperature looks good and below the half line.

Now that my little daughter will go on school vacation may try the Warranty suggestion from MoparKJ. But it will not be in the next few days. I promise to post any results.

Regards,

I have a 05 4.7L Durango and have had mine completely shut off twice. The first time I had just filled up my gas tank and went to go around the pump to leave and it just shut off, no warning lights no indication that it had even shut off, other than it was hard for me to stear. I called a Dodge Dealer and took it in, I got the famous we can't do anything if we can't duplicate the problem... they "found" nothing wrong with it of course. Shortly after getting my Durango back it shut off again, this time in reverse, each time it has shut off I have been turning the wheel (different directions). I decided to take it to a Chrylser Dealer this time, they told me to come by and let them check it out before I brought it in and left it, of course it did nothing that night. I decided to go home and see if I could find others having similar problems, and I found this forum. I seem to have gotten a better response when I printed information that I found from this forum than I did when I was just telling them what was going on, I took the printed sheets with me so that they could see that I knew that there was a problem and that Chrysler was aware of it too. They flashed my computer, I am not sure what it exactly does other that it updates the software, that has stopped my vehicle from shutting completely off but it has not fixed my problem with the idle. It still feels like it is going to shut off when I am idling in traffic. I have taken it back for a third time (still the Chrysler Dealer), this time they have changed the Throttle Positioning Sensor, this was done on Friday, May 5th, 06. I was hoping this was going to fix my problem, on the way home I noticed it doing the same thing, during my drive home I was stopped by a train and my rpm gage went from 600 rpm's down to 200 rpm's. It had only been going down to 400 prior to the throttle sensor being changed. I called the dealer back and they "said" that they are waiting from a reply from an engineer.

My Durango does it right after I crank it, and after it has been driven for a long time. I live in FL though, so it could have something to do with the humidity, I know it has something to do with the A/C as well, because I don't notice it when the air is off, but it is rarely off. When you take your vehicle to the dealer and you get the "we have to duplicate it to fix it". I would also take it on a hot or humid day and make them stand there and wait til it does it. My mechanic was leaning against my side view mirror when he felt it, he didn't have to test drive it, nor have to be in it, he could feel the way it idled from standing outside of the vehicle. There may be some mechanics that are not truly aware of the issue, but some how I doubt it. All they have to do is get on the phone with Chrylser to find out about "flashing the computer". I just hope that Chrysler is truly working on resolving this issue. I do NOT want to end up in a wreck because of it.

I will post again when I get an update from my mechanic, I am supposed to call him tomorrow to see if he has heard anything from the engineer. I wish you all luck with your vehicles.

****update**** 5/11 I was told that an engineer is going to be in town on the 22nd of this month and they have me scheduled to bring my truck in then to hopefully fix it. Once I get my Durango back I will post what they find here.

... I was thinking... could it be something with the engine's temperature? Mine always read a little below half. If I stay parked with the engine running, as soon as I start driving again the engine sounds like when I started from cold (throtle open and retaining the 1st gear). Minutes later everything goes back to normal (while driving).

Any comments?
