Default Tire/wheel questions 04 SLT 4x4

To start off, I'm new here and this is my first post. I'll go ahead and say that I've already done a search to my question and cannot find the answer, so please fire away with your knowledge.

I have an 04 SLT 4x4 with the 4.7L. I am in need of new tires real soon and have always loved the BFG All Terrains and Mud Terrains. I am also thinking of getting new rims also (maybe). Here is my question. I'm unlike most people and do NOT want to stuff the absolute largest rim into the wheelwell. I think 18" is the absolute largest I would ever go, if that. I know that I have a lot more options in tires if I actually went down in rim size. I remember years ago it was 15" or 16" and that was it. I can get so many different tires in a 15" rim (say a BFG All Terrain in a 31x10.50-15) and Ithink it would look great and beefy on the truck.

Has anyone else here gone this route? Also, what is the exact rim offset and lug spacing needed for these?

Thanks in advance.......love the forum so far!

lug pattern is 5x5.5 by the way 15's and 16's wont clear the calipers

Seth, I heard you mention the B.F.Goodrich,

"I have an 04 SLT 4x4 with the 4.7L. I am in need of new tires real soon and have always loved the BFG All Terrains and Mud Terrains."

I have a 03 SLT Same 4.7 engine. I am in the same boat with the tires, and my local dealer, "COSTCO" has a set of
B.F.GAll Terrains that I am about 95% sold on. My question to you is have you had All Terrains in the past? My last set was Bridgestone Duelers, which lasted very long time. The size I am looking for are 245/70/16's What can you tell me about the A/T's based on previous ownership/ride experience if applicable?

I had BFG all terrains on my pickup and loved them. They handled snow and ice very well. They are also a perfect balance of off road traction and highway handling. I have every intention of putting them on my 04 durango when the time comes.

Jason, Thanks for ringing in, I am not concerned about offroad, my main concern is smooth, quiet highway ride/ good traction and reasonable prices. Which due to the sale at COSTCO that starts JAN 8th, that is covered. I am glad about the snow /ice handling, of course the way this winter is going, that doesn't appear to be much of an issue. We have gotten a lot of rain that should have been snow so if you can add anything about wet handling/ rain water displacement and hydroplaning characteristics that would be nice. Although my main goal is to stay on the paved surface, I am glad to know that if I do wind up in a ditch, or embankment I should have reasonable expectations of getting out, quickly and safely, well at least safely.

P.S: I almost forgot, "1st GEN owner request permission to enter the 2nd Generation Durango house/forum?"

The only bad thing I just figured out is that BFG AT doesn't come in a 245/70/R17 which is the standard tire size for the 04 Durango. The owners manual does list a alternate size 265/65/R17 which is available.

Have you checked out tirerack.com...
VERY reasonable tires and TONS of reviews and ratings.
Just checked the Yokohamas..High survey ratings and good price...About $ 500, shipped..Plus about another $20 per tire for mounting n balancing.

Rich, Yes I have checked out Tirerack. I am impressed with their selection, but I am sold on COSTCO for tires based on previous experience, and ease of location, logistics, and overall the wayhavebeen treated there. I can not be talked out of COSTCO, I was just wondering if anyone had input regarding the Goodrich All Terrains.

Steve-

I have had 4 sets of the All-terrains and absolutly love them. I have one vehicle where I got 75,000 miles out of them. By the end the tread was very low, but they wear great and produce no more road noise than the factory tires. As jasonwyo said, they are a great balance between off road and highway. I live in Minnesota and they handle great on snow, ice and mud; but yet ride down the road like a regualr radial.

In all, I don't think you would be disappointed in the tires. They are a good investment.

Hope that helps.....
